With an avatar that size we may get some more interesting ones. Will try to give a rep.

With the numbers under the reputation you can see the change right away. Once you hit the ok the number changes. Under just the green bar you weren't sure if it made a change or not.

I think the actual numbers would be better, because after you reach the upper echelon the bars don't change. Competition is the answer.

jp, The levels are written down somewhere but I'll be darned if I can find it. I believe the next level is 3000 posts and that will get you to TSP Universe.

i think the total reputation points number is a rather shallow gage, two members can play 'patty cake' back and forth and jack the numbers up. that does lower their reputation power though.

reputation power (the points others get when you rep them) is based on how promiscuous you are giving reputation out. which can also be inflated by a miserly approach to appreciating other's contributions.

both total points and power can be found by clicking 'settings' up by your username and scrolling down to the bottom.

what about a hybrid metric showing the relationship between the two?

The system won't let that happen, won't allow two in a row try it on me!:D

that is right; I have frequently been 'advised' I needed to spread the reps around abit before getting back to the poster I had initially clicked. :embarrest:

That's why we had to get rid of the negative rep option for members (although mods can still give negative rep.) I haven't seen any abuse with positive rep, but yes, abuse would deminish your "power" or weight of the reps you give.
