Silver bars vs. coin.

Back in 2005-2006, I purchased 1oz. silver american eagle coins for around $9. But, in 2010 I converted some to 100oz. bars. I still have about 50 coins left and 3 bars. I'm not sure if that was a smart move to buy the bars.

I've taken a loss of profit since converting to bars, but, still up from original purchase. I might sell if it goes down to $20.

I'm not sure what good bars will be if the world goes crazy and we need to trade for necessities; other than using it to knock someone over the head for protection.

things to do with silver bars:

use it as a doorstop and watch for the look of surprise on peoples faces when they realize you can afford to leave 2 grand laying around on the floor.

put one in your toilet tank to conserve water with every flush.

set one on your coffee table next to the ansel adams photo book and when visitors ask tell them it used to be gold but you traded it in because the color clashed with the drapes.

keep one in the trunk next to the jack and use it to block the wheels from rolling while changing a flat tire.

melt it down and cast it into bullets in case that old story about vampires is true. for extra fun swallow a few bullets and insist to the xray technician that you've been shot.

hit zombies over the head with it even if the world doesn't go crazy, they probably deserve it anyway.

tie two of them together and hang them from your belt then strut around the lobby of your brokerage house like birchtree, that guy has some serious stones.

sell it to me, i'm a buyer at $20.

That's a good thing you're pointing out, when you have bars you sort of limit the number of potential buyers who can afford to pay you. You may also get a better percentage profit above spot price when you sell smaller coins. Wish I could afford bars...

I couldn't afford to buy now. The timing was right and I had some extra money to invest when I sold my house in WA, before moving to Hawaii.

I'm going to research this more, and keep a watch on the value. My instincts are telling me to hold on to them...trouble could be right around the corner.

Amusing. Not the thread about silver bars but the change in the ads at the top. They switched from don't buy gold to don't buy silver. Those bots are right on top of things!

FWIW and I admit it's not much, unless I needed the money badly I would hold on to them too.

I will offer $20.5 if you want to sell. I could bury them next to the rest on the east side of the pool pump at the southwest corner of my house at...

That's so funny. Just yesterday, when I got to my first delivery spot, I started ranting to this guy about how tired I am from being forced to work 10-13 hrs a day(until 9PM somedays!) and my days off for the last 2 weeks. He hands me a chocolate protein bar while laughing at me. I start ripping the paper off the bar and stuffing it into my face, changing my rant to stoopid americans off the cruise ship, looking at me with my letter carrier uniform on and asking, "do you work for the Post Office?" or, "how much to mail a letter to america?" Really?!!! I just want to spray them with my dog spray.

Anyway, I'm showing signs of calming down after inhaling the chocolate, and he's just laughing, saying this reminds him of that snickers commercial. I start laughing and feeling better. I'm pretty sure it was the humor, not the chocolate, that made me feel better, and the realization that I'll be laughing all the way to bank with my next paycheck.

Hey! I just may be able to buy some more silver. weeeeeeee!!!!!

I've been trading gold and silver ETFs for a long time but I finally bought some coins this weekend. Started with a "sleeve" of silver "rounds" as I learned they are called. I figured it will be easier to buy bread with these coins when the dollar collapses because I doubt Walmart will accept my ETF shares. :)

Daily. This is a daily occurrence for me.
I wear the uniform on a daily basis. Stop in a Tim Hortons or some other establishment and get dumb questions all of the time. Mainly (while I am wearing Army ACUs mind you...) "are you in the Marines?" "Are you in the coast guard?"
I just give them blank looks being that they don't just read the tape on the left hand side.
