View Full Version : Possible TSP Talk Email Server?

Many of you know that the delivery of our forum email notifications - in particular the forum generated alerts that go out to premium members, are not always delivered by some of the email services. AOL has been blocking them for many members, gmail has been flaky, hotmail, bellsouth.net, etc.

I was wondering if there would be any interest in getting xxxxx@tsptalk.com email addresses? You could use your username - ex: username @ tsptalk.com - or anything you wanted actually, as long as someone didn't already have it. I also own tsp.net which would be short and sweet (i.e... username @ tsp.net) - if that would be better.

I don't have all of the details yet but it is something we could look into. You would be able to use it for your personal email like any other email service if you wanted, but the main purpose would be that email from the forum (http://www.tsptalk.com/images/email_support.gif) would not be blocked since it would basically be coming from the same servers.

The catch is that I would have to pay for each individual mailbox, and the cost would depend on the size of the mailboxes - usually between 200 MB to 10 GB. It wouldn't be expensive, maybe $2 to $4 a month - not something I could eat if we had a big demand, but again I'll work on the details and see if I can get bulk discounts and offer it as part of the premium services.

I know it's Friday and there won't be a lot of folks online, but I'm looking for any feedback. Thanks!

What about forwarding options so that that email address would be forwarded to someones, say Gmail.

Forwards are handled differently, so that may also fix the issues you are having with notifications.

I wish I could speak to this, but I haven't had problems. Right now I'm using Gmail and it appears to work flawlessly, in the past I've used my US.AF.MIL account at two different bases/domains and it worked perfectly. I would not be against it, but i wouldn't use it either, mostly because I already have 3 email address and between work & home I am over-communicated...

I have a similar position that JTH has. Using gmail has worked as well as can be expected. I would rather not have another email address to keep track of, let alone pay for.

i would like a new free email address. i'm sure all of my other free email addresses are being spied on by the nsa/cia/google/facebook machine judging by the ads i see. apparently they're so good they even know what i'm thinking before i can search for it.

I was thinking the same thing. Even if it was set up as you said... get an email and forward it to one of these other email services. Whatever would help. I am almost certain that this new email software would allow forwards.

Good point. Your mailbox would not be scanned to send you ads like the big email services.

That's what's confusing... Some folks have no problems, and for others it's intermittent, and others can't seem to get any of our emails. Strange.

Sounds too many like their may be several different possibilities going on.

Some folks may be using an android platform to receive their gmail, the sync may be disabled or set every 4 hours ect. Also, I've noticed that some DoD systems are able to disable gmail features such as downloading attachments, and some of those proxy servers drag azz. I currently have all my emails configured within MS Office 2010's Outlook, it works well, near real-time.

I also wonder if folks would add the tsp email as a contact in their address book, if this would resolve some issues.

Yup... FAQ #6 on TSP Talk FAQ - Email Alerts (http://www.tsptalk.com/faq_email_alerts.html)

Because we send out a lot of alerts, some mail servers assume we are spammers and either completely block the email, or it gets sent to your spam / junk folder. You should check those folders for the alerts.

If you find the alert in your spam / junk folder, there should be a way to mark it as 'not junk or not spam' etc. The filters may make note of that.

Also, you should add http://www.tsptalk.com/images/email_support.gifto your address book / list of contacts. That is another filter the mail servers might use. If the new email is coming from a known sender, it may let it through.

If all else fails, you can contact your email provider and ask them what you can do to get email fromhttp://www.tsptalk.com/images/email_support.gifthrough.

I post this in the premium forum threads since their forum alerts are time sensitive...

I don't have any problems with my yahoo.com email. But I do receive way to much SPAM -more than 50 a day.

Since it's Monday morning and more folks are online, I'm going to bump this thread to try to get more feedback on an email service...

See first post in this thread for more details. (http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/site-news-announcements/15660-possible-tsp-talk-email-server.html#post398329)

Sorry about that VLM, just hit the unsubscribe button and I'll make sure you don't get anymore porn. :toung:

I agree that I have way too many e-mail accounts to even dream of checking another one...
