According to these guysdaily average volume on the NYSEin 1964 was 4.9 million shares.

Last year daily average volume was 1,460 million shares, almost 300 times higher. There was no NASDAQ in 1964. Last year 1,770 million shares were traded over the counter on an average day, adding another 300 times.
So today the market handles over 600 times as many shares. I wonder howdollar-volume compares?
