2 ICE Agents Shot by Fellow Agent at Federal Building in Long Beach

One ICE agent was killed, a second ICE agent injured, the shooter was a third ICE agent who was killed


LONG BEACH (KTLA) - Long Beach police and fire and federal officials were dispatched to the Glenn M. Anderson Federal Building in Long Beach early Thursday evening in a shooting incident that reportedly left two Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE (http://www.tsptalk.com/topic/social-issues/demographics/immigration/u.s.-immigration-customs-enforcement-ORGOV0000136156.topic)) agents dead, and a third ICE agent shot and injured.

The shooter was himself allegedly an ICE agent, who killed one fellow officer and wounded another before being shot and killed.

The shootings reportedly erupted on the 7th floor of the building, behind closed doors. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and transported the injured locally, to St. Mary's Hospital.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent accused of shooting a supervisor died after an "intense" struggle for his gun with a colleague who burst into the office after he heard shots fired, an official said Saturday.


The shooting Thursday happened after Ezequiel Garcia had a discussion about his job performance with ICE's second-in-command in the Los Angeles region, agency spokeswoman Virginia Kice said. Another agent who attended the meeting had just left the office and rushed back after the shots rang to disarm Garcia.

They will start checking their guns now before any kind of performance review or counseling, I bet.

The rule where I work for years has been that the supervisor and supervisor's supervisor are in the room during all performance evals. No one on one. We are not LE and do not carry weapons, though I was asked to leave a punch down tool outside a few years ago.

I am not trying to make light of this but am wondering if the move to eperformance has anything to do with this type of incident?

This seems to shed a bit of light on things. At least early on it seems like just another instance of someone snapping, perhaps with a lot of goading by someone in management. From where I stand I am surprised it hasn't happened until now. I'm not saying it is or isn't the case but rest assured as someone who has been around this patch a long long time that this sort of thing shouldn't come as a surprise. One thing I am sure of is that I will be taking yet another class as they cast about seeking to offer yet another solution to a current problem. Currently it's DUI's, last year it was suicide among our rather unhappy tribe of mixed agencies now workplace violence will take center stage. I love those agency employee satisfaction reports which come out annually showing DHS at or near the bottom of the heap. Perhaps some day they will figure out it's because they treat their employees like refuse, well maybe someday. Until then around and around and around we go and next year they can do it all without me.
