Thread: Suggestions for "TSP Tips?"

TSP Tips is finishing up a discussion of loans. Maybe the column is super-strictly only how to do things on the TSP website, but as a newbie, I have spent the last two weeks on a learning curve that such a column could address in the future, such as (but not limited to):
1. Which chartable, trackable indices best match TSP funds and why? You can dig around in the forum and find this out, but an authoritative FAQ-style statement would be helpful. Effects of compounding? Where do you go to get the historical info? Which charting sites are best?
2. Mechanics of market timing for the TSP'er. How to track? By default daily trades on the TSP site generate no electronic trail, in contrast to bank/brokerages, which provide at least 3 months of past activity. There's no commission for TSP transactions, which is huge, but there's also a 24 hour lag...and picking up a full penny in the G fund.
3. There's lots of stuff on the web about market timing and technical analysis., but TSP trading is constrained. S and F are least correlated (-0.32). What's the diff between trading such a limited portfolio and the general advice you see in books/websites? Seems to me there are only dogs in this fight: F, C or S, and I?
