Thread: Vacations

  1. Default Re: Vacations

Kathy, I have been to Lima and Cusco during late December/early January for a couple weeks. We hiked the Inca trail and stayed in Cusco for about a week. The weather was pleasant and the altitude took a day or two to get used to. In the mountains on the trail the weather was very sporadic. I was hiking in a t-shirt one minute and wearing a mid-weight waterproof parka the next. Beautiful country with friendly people.

Thanks, albacore for the info. I was hoping to hike the Inca Trail, but, I have a bum knee and can't. I do think I'll be able to hike a few miles though.

Here, on the Big Island, we have Mauna Kea which is 13,797 ft. and the visitor center is at the 9000ft level. I plan to drive up there in the upcoming months and see if the altitude will bother me. I don't think it will.
From the visitor center my boyfriend and I will take a hike up to the observatory, to see how I do with a pack, and how my knee holds up.

Where did you stay in Cusco? I've been online looking at different hotels. Nothing fancy, just maybe one with a shower and a toilet is what I'm hoping for, because I'll be roughing it in a hut with no electricity the first week in the rainforest.

It is winter in the southern hemisphere, similar to February in the northern hemisphere. to the north of 25-30 degrees south, though, you're in tropical climates. I would assume that cold fronts move into Peru this time of year with rainy weather. Machu Piccu is nearly 8,000 ft up, but its only around 13 degrees south. I'm guessing highs there these days are in the 50s/60s.

Thinking about going to So Calif in Dec. Taking my 16yr old and hitting Disney, Universal Studio before my disability gets to bad. A few years ago we did the trip and bought the City Pass for tickets.

Kathy, have an Inca Kola for me. My Spanish teacher always used to brag about it and since I don't think I'll make it to Peru, I want to know what all the hoopla is about.
We'll have a few bottles of vino when we go to Italy.

Leaving for sunny Napa California tomorrow. Decided to go to Napa instead of Vegas for the cooler weather.

Its going to be 103 degrees on Thursday in Napa and only 101 in Vegas.
