Your TSP nest egg: Size does count

A growing number of federal workers, many of them husband-and-wife teams, have joined the Thrift Savings Plan Millionaires Club the hard way. They have modest incomes. They didn’t make big bucks on the outside, then come into government as political appointees or federal judges.

What they did do is invest from day one. Put as much as they could afford in the TSP every paycheck. And they kept investing the same amount each time, whether the markets were up, down. Or as we saw in 2008-2009, in free-fall.

When it comes to your balance, I'd say size means everything

True, what else is there... besides allocation, I guess?

The article seams to dwell on Buy & Hold and on your contributions instead of your earnings. I think that says a lot in todays low interest world. If you want a million, put that in there. You aren't going to strike it rich on your returns.

Patience. And being a steady investor. They knew, or learned quickly, that chasing high returns, or retreating when the market is down is not the way to make money over the long haul, no matter how good your financial witch doctor claims to be.
According to a Columbia University study, those investors who check their portfolios too often make decisions that have a negative impact on their long-term financial prospects.

The truth is slow and steady, dollar cost average, don't listen to anyone who has a system who thinks they can time the market. Because as everyone knows, you can't time the market.

Or they can follow you to their death.

Another great article over on Federal News Radio- there are now about 10,000 TSP account holders that have made it to the $1 MILLION DOLLAR account mark- and a lot of folks with a half-million dollar value or more:

(Snip) Over the past 12 months, the number of feds with balances between $50,000 and $249,000 rose slightly to almost 1.5 million.

Investors with account balances of $250,000 to $449,000 jumped from 371,209 last year to 413,491 this year.

The number of people with TSP accounts worth $500,000 to $749,000 went from 92,092 to 120,124 this year.

Civil servants with accounts worth between $750,000 and $999,000 nearly doubled from 18,800 to 35,161.

And last but not least, the number of TSP millionaires — which includes both active duty and retired federal workers — went from 3,272 last year to 9,599 as of the most recent tally.
