Thread: DOW not matching S Fund share prices

  1. Default DOW not matching S Fund share prices

    I have a concern about the differences in the ups and downs that are accounted for in the DOW and S Fund. I've noticed this several times before and so this is a growing concern. Shares are equally in the C Fund (S&P) & S fund (DOW). Friday, the S&P was down about 5 points and the DOW was just up 2 points. Today, Saturday, when I looked at my C Fund (S&P) price share, I wasn't surprised to see it down about 5 cents a share. But, I was surprised to see the S Fund (DOW) price share down over 10 cents, which by the way lost us about 600 bucks. Can anyone tell me why, when the DOW is up, that the TSP S Fund would show your price shares down? Thanks, Paul

    I thought the Wilshire 4500 (^W4500) was what one uses to track the S Fund?

    Well, what I see on the TSP menu investment fund, fund options is: "The S Fund's investment objective is to match the performance of the Dow Jones U.S. Completion Total Stock Market Index". I have read the wilshire 4500 somewhere in TSP website info, but this is what they have under this menu. When they use the words Dow Jones in this statement I take it means that they are somewhat paralleling the end of the day DOW numbers.

    I noticed down at the bottom of this page TSP TALK put the fund chart matching the wall street acronyms. I.E.; S&P (C FUND), DOW (S FUND); ETC., ETC.

    S&P 500 (C fund)

    1d 5d 3m 6m 1y 2y
    Dow Completion (S fund)
    1d 5d 3m 6m
    EFA (I fund)

    1d 5d 3m 6m 1y 2y
    Bonds (F fund)
    1d 5d 3m 6m 1y 2y

    At the bottom if TSP Talk I always see 4 charts that are linked to Yahoo.com...They are:
    S&P 500 = C
    W4500 = S
    EFA= I
    AGG = F
    The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) closed higher Friday up 0.02%.
    But the W4500 Dow Completion (S Fund) chart closed down -0.66%...

    I found out online the TSP board changed from Wilshire 4500 to this Dow Jones U.S. Completion Total Stock Market Index in February 2012. Below is the website if you want to see who TSP paid for the recommended change and the Hewitt report. TSP alone should have a chat line where all applicants can talk about their concerns and recommendations.

    With that information I went to the net to find the ticker symbol for Dow Jones U.S. Completion Total Stock Market Index which is DWCPF and plugged that into Yahoofinance symbol search window. and it came up with Fridays ending result for I guess we could now call the S Fund/DWCPF:
    Dow Jones U.S. Completion Total (^DWCPF)

    -DJI
    707.77 4.81(0.68%) Oct 12

    So going to the DOW numbers doesn't give the correct information on the ups and downs of the S Fund. It appears the symbol DWCPF is what you watch at to parallel the S Fund and what it is doing. Previous post I had the DWCPF transposed. All of this is what I suppose. I'm just a student in all of this. But I wish we had a chat line on the TSP website so we could get straight-line info within that community. I didn't see in their information that they even had the symbol DWCPF in the explanation of the S Fund, so I don't know even know for sure if my assumptions are correct with this symbol.

    I believe the Wilshire 4500 tracks the S fund.

    It's called the Dow completion index (S fund) but the call letters are W4500 where the bold letters below that are located. That is what to look for. The actual Dow only has 20 stocks and our S fund has 4500 stocks. The next 4500 after the to 500 or S&p 500 in size. The S is fo small cap.

    "The actual Dow only has 20 stocks"?

    I thought it was 30 stocks.
