49 right now and hope to have the ability to retire at 60. I am on track for that right now but may keep working a few extra years but no longer than 65.

    Valkyrie,

Here's info on the WEP. https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/wep-chart.html
If I retired next month I'd have 29 years of "substantial earnings", so my permanent reduction to my monthly social security payments would be $44.30 (and my wife's would be reduced by half of that amount since she'll get half of my amount). Granted, that's not much, but I'd prefer to the reduction to be zero.

The Substantial Earnings amount is raised each year, at a rate much faster than inflation in most years, which is quite confounding. I'm assuming the amount goes up by 7% in 2018 and another 7% in 2019, but even so I'll still be able to barely clear that bar if I retire on 12/22/2018.
The amounts are in the table at the end of this document:
    https://www.ssa.gov/planners/retire/wep-chart.html
There have been bills in Congress to eliminate the WEP every year, but they never pass.

Max I could go is 57 with the BOP, but if I'm financially set at 50 and made good investments up until then and after, I feel I could go early and do something fun for work after 50 and enjoy the remaining years I have left.
It's a double edged sword with a LEO retirement (I did 30 with the BOP and DOJ). If you retire at 50 you can get another job and earn a substantial amount before your MRA before impacting your Special Retirement Supplement. If you retire after 55 you can earn substantial less without adversely affecting your SRS. The "double edged sword" part is, if you continue to work that extra 5-7 years you may not even have to consider seeking post-retirement employment. Personally, I worked until I was 56, and retired in December 2013 in order to get my full payout for A/L. If I had worked until my MRA in August 2014 I would have lost 4 months of accumulated A/L. I never regretted working those extra 6 years, and I've never had the need financially to go out and get another job.
I stay so busy since I retired I don't know how I got anything done when I was working.
What's your current duty station? I was TDY to just about every joint in the BOP at one time or another (I travelled ALOT with SORT, and as a Regional Supervisor).

About 3 years; although I can retire now with 31 years. So looking at Sept-Oct 2020 and 34 years.
But it all depends on son finishing college and how I feel. I like the money, job not stressful, great boss, telecommute and I like my work!!

I turned 50 in August and I am also a LEO. My pay is capped and I see each paycheck how much I didn't get paid. We pay in 1.3 to our retirement and only draw 1% after 20 years LEO. I bought my military time back so I have 31 years G time. Between trading and 22 rentals I stay plenty busy! I will draw 2500.00 from TSP and will bring home more in retirement than I do working. Makes no sense whatsoever for me to continue to work and I have 3 shorties at home. I have never read in any book how someone made a mistake spending to much time with their family! I will miss the action but not much else. Good times and thanks to a great forum we can invest well.
