Thread: Coffee?

  1. #1

    Default Coffee?

For the last decade or more I have been on the obsessed side of finding good coffee. Most coffees are just OK to me. Starbucks? Not my favorite. McD's, not good enough. Beans bought in most grocery stores are already too old and coffee shop beans can get expensive, although if it's good enough, I don't mind paying up.

On rare occasions I come across a coffee shop that gets it right. I had that experience with a coffee shop chain in Northern Washington State last month called "Woods". I took a bag of their Woods Blend home with me and yup, it was almost as good as in their shop. They sell their beans online but the price to ship it is about the same as the price of the beans, so it's not practical.

This year I started to roast my own beans in an effort to make sure I have the freshest coffee. I have a high end coffee maker and grinder to help make that perfect cup at home. Unroasted green coffee beans actually last for years. It's the roasted coffee that starts to decline in quality after about 5 days.

I've bought a few recommended bags of the unroasted beans on Amazon and they were good, but not great. So my search for excellent coffee continues.

I actually prefer a light or medium roast where you can taste the subtle flavors. Dark roasted coffee masks those flavors in my opinion.

    What say you? Any suggestions?

As a fellow coffee snob, I find its more in the water (which is why Starbucks is usually better than other places, they run their water thru a special filter).

The perfect coffee for me is FRESHLY GROUND high quality beans (pre-ground loses its flavor quickly and tastes like cardboard after a few days). Sometimes I like rich, smooth Kona or Sumatra to dark toasty French Roast and everything in between, BUT WATER IS THE KEY!. NO TAP-WATER!!!

I often boil spring water (microwave), then grind fresh beans, put them into a "French Press", add the water just as the last boiling bubble stops (too hot burns the coffee). Stir briefly, then cover, let sit 3 minutes...slowly apply press, raise it and 10 seconds later repeat press (to extract more oils from the coffee), then pour into a cup and enjoy.

Yes, the French press does make a good cup of coffee. I haven't used mine in a while. Maybe it's time to go back to it. I also agree about the water. I just used the fridge's filter but I make sure not to get it too hot (just before the boil) when using the press.

Regarding Starbucks, about 1/4 of its more high visit stores have a "Clover Press".
Makes a great, french press-like coffee...thru this machine that costs about 9K.

Find a Starbucks that has it...then pick your beans, which they will grind right in front of you ( I like the Sumatra or aged Sumatra, but will sometimes have Espresso, Italian, or Komodo Roast). They have a menu of exotic beans but I find them too light.

You actually watch them do it in front of you, its a neat machine, and works like a gravity induced reverse French Press.
Damn....now I feel like having an afternoon cup (lol)

Interesting. I'll have to try it next time I go. Can we bring our own beans?

I love good Coffee, but hardly ever get a great cup. I use to grind my own beans that was much better than pre-ground. The wife likes Spanish coffee but it's hard to get over here. Got me thinking now, I can almost smell it!!1.gif

Oh, and here's how to NOT have a good cup of coffee.

Avoid coffee you see sitting on the hot burner...if it sits there for more than 15 minutes, the bottom part gets burnt and starts to taste like battery acid!

Can't stand the taste of coffee, but love the smell of a good fresh brewed pot. I know the coffee you guys are talking about is way better then the stuff my mom cooked up on our stove for my dad in the morning, but it was that smell I woke up to before school. Every once in awhile I can get that flashback. Some good memories.

Coffee has always been a thing discussed in my house over the years. No one loved my coffee, some hated it.

Cousin-in-law said it was weak swill. Her boy friend declared it too strong (same pot). My son, brother, sisters and brothers-in-law never said anything one way or the other but drank lots of it. My daughter found it lacking and suggested buying Dunkin Donuts brand. All at the time agreed it was better so that’s what SO has been buying the last several years. I miss those white or yellow label generic brands from the commissary. Maybe I should go back to them. The DD stuff costs over twice what I used to buy for ½ the amount. A coffee snob I am not. I found this clip from the movie “Bucket List” quite amusing. A hospital patient discovers why his roommate’s special coffee has such a unique taste and aroma.

Yes, and microwaving it to reheat doesn't do it any favors either.

OK a coffee story. it is true and happened to me.

Just out of the apprenticeship and a fresh out journeyman.
Working second shift and my responsibility was keeping an eye on the lube oil pumps and equipment coolers for leaks and mop up any spills. Plus I had to make the coffee for the shift. Never drank coffee let alone how to make coffee and explained to the crew maybe someone else should make the coffee. NOPE!! it's your job. So, I go to make coffee. it's a 12 cup pot so I figured it would be faster if I use hot water and since it was 12 cups I put in 12 scoops. Honestly I had no clue. Well needless to say they thought about stringing me up after the first swig, but at least I didn't have to make coffee any more.
May the force be with us.
