Remember when you had to wait for the TV to WARM UP before you could watch one of three channels. Those were the days... I drank a lot of TANG because that's what the astronauts drank in space and a Snickers bar cost a nickel.

Oh yeah....and when I spoke to an adult it was "yes maam\sir or no maam\sir or suffer getting smacked up side the side.

Had to give up TANG when I started to turn orange. Loved that stuff.

    Oh nostalgia...

    "Please..."

    "...please."

    "Would you mind ... please?"

    "Could you ... please?"

and someone already said, "thank you." "Please," and "Thank you" travel together a lot of times.

In sum, I've discovered long ago that the top three are: Please, Thanks, and using a question rather than a command.

Remember when you called your neighbors "Mr. or Mrs." so and so? My kid's friends call me "Tom".

Also, I live in a nice quiet neighborhood, but I don't know anybody's name, or anybody more than a house away. That's as much my fault, but it's a change from years ago.

Also, when I was a kid, I always said hello to the neighbors when I saw them. Now I wave at kids in the neighborhood and they stare at me with a clueless look on their face.

    Yes, things have changed.

    Yes, things have changed.

Yes I remember and agree with all of the above. Waving to kids also seems to make them type something in to their hand held devices so I don't bother anymore.

Stopping at the CBU on the way home from work gets looks from users of the park adjacent and sometimes questions like "why are you stopping here?" Some times the park users have left their cars directly in front of the CBU which irritates me. Park users mostly seem to be sitting at the picnic table exchanging things.

Yes, things have changed in the hood and the rest of the world.

"excuse me, i think you dropped this"

i was in walmart last week and this fancy lady was pulling her cart by the front and talking on her smart phone, high heels just clacking away down the aisle. out of the basket/tray up by the handle bars drops a head of celery, right on the floor. so i picked up and caught up to her and tapped her on the shoulder and handed it to her.

she looked at me like i was going to assault her and never stopped talking on her phone and when i walked back to my cart i saw her put the celery on the shelf by the cheez-its. that is not where celery belongs you selfish wench, and i only touched the plastic sleeve part at the bottom. it made me feel like a pervert.

i just didn't want her to get home and not have sprigs of celery for her bloody maries, because i know how dissapointing that can be. no good deed goes unpunished.

That's not just a Southern thang.....it has always been the appropriate way to address our elders regardless to differences in this entire country. Until well,... the last.......# of years. Not a political thread so I end it here.

Too bad these situations can't be played out in a way that helps people better see themselves for who they really are. For example, it would have been nice to give her the celery back to her but tell her it was a good thing she dropped it because the news had reported recalls of celery because of "Acute Alexithymia", then suggest she Google it on her smart phone.

ha, so true. there is still an actual pay phone in front of a store in my town but it is disconnected. nobody will admit to owning it, even it means money for them.

i offered the store owners $500 for it, but they say they can't sell it because it belongs to the phone company. the phone company won't sell it to me either because they have no record of any pay phones in their infrastructure inventory, apparently they wrote them all off in an accounting shuffle years go. so there it sits, all lonely and disconnected.

i want to put it in my man cave next to the mechanical reel nickle slot machine, the coke vending machine that dispenses coor's light, and my missle command console (with the cool roller ball control). i think the only way to make the phone work again would be to plug it into a wireless router so it could piggyback on the cell phone signal.

"You're welcome." Now it is "No problem."

And by the way, can we mention reversals here? It used to be that cashiers and checkers (when they could add numbers) said "Thank you" and the customer said "You're welcome." Now the checker says "No problem" when the customer says "Thank you," first.

    Good point.

They also used to orally count the change out as they handed it to you, one bill at a time--to verify that you are receiving the correct change.
