Thread: eBay Hacked

    Default eBay Hacked

For those who may have missed it, it appears eBay is now saying they have been hacked. The report I saw said no "financial info" was taken, but they ARE recommending that users change their password ASAP...changed mine today !

    Thanks Stoplight,

Here's what it now says after logging in and clicking to edit password:

Ebay is asking its users to reset their passwords due to the unauthorized access to our corporate information network. This may result in a delay of service due to the high traffic volume. We ask for your patience and that you return to eBay soon. In the meantime, please be assured that no activity can occur on your account until your password is reset.

Thanks for the heads up. Changed mine. It looks like millions of accounts were hacked. It is being called the largest breach of personal data ever.
    Is today Saturday again?

"On Wednesday, we announced that we are asking all eBay users to change their password. This is because of a cyberattack that compromised our eBay user database, which contained your encrypted password.

Because your password is encrypted (even we don’t know what it is), we believe your eBay account is secure. But we don’t want to take any chances."

if its encrypted, I don't see the need to change it. my PP account has different PW.

    opinions?

I would not take the chance. I changed mine.

I would not take the chance. I changed mine. How does Ebay know that the passwords cannot be decrypted?

Yeah...just ask some of the "spooks" who hang out here about "encryption" ! They won't answer, though...

Encryption can be successfully cracked with enough time and computing power. The longer, more random, more varied your password is, the less likely it'll be cracked; should someone or some organization decide to invest time and computer resources.

Another concern is using the same or similar password for other accounts; cracking one account gives them a head start on the others.

Example of a good password: l!sH0p@3bay#to0

Easy to remember (derivative of "I shop at ebay too"). Symbols--in the order they appear on the keyboard...or mix them up in a way you'll remember. At least two: CAPS, #'s, and symbols, several characters long. Or use a reputable password manager--that's what I do.

Example of a (20 character) LastPass generated password (it can do up to 100 character passwords) : a*Tx!ZI31jUA#9^txvDe

I had my eBay account hacked into a few years ago by some little creep from Viet Nam. He ordered around $4000 worth of various items and gave an address in IN to have them mailed too. Lucky for me Paypal blocked the sales because he couldn't get in without my password. But it was a big hassle for me to straighten out the mess with eBay (call center in India ) it took a few weeks, but now I change my password on my email and financial sites every 4-6 months. Oh! That's how he got into my eBay account was by hacking into my email and having my emails sent to him. I had to change EVERY password on all my financial accounts. Pain in the ass this cyber world we live in sometimes.
