Default Buying Health Insurance for One Person Outside the Government

The Gov Health Insurance ends for dependents when they turn 22 yo regardless if they are in college or not.

Has anyone recently researched health insurance programs outside the government for a healthy young adult? If so, would you share with us what you found out / what your experience has been?

Thanks. This should be a topic of interest to a lot of us.

    Greg

Try Assurant Health. We had good experience with them. Reasonable rates. One thing their rules require at least 30 days of coverage while a student to carry student coverage after graduating. Good luck. Most companies allow dependent coverage up to 25 or 26 if full-time students but not Uncle Sam. These days you're lucky if students graduate in 5 years. There is a bill pending to change this for future but could be years even if it passes.

There is short term insurance available that could carry a person until they find a job with that benefit. I was under such a plan when I was in between jobs.

Check with an Insurance broker. They could have some options that you haven't considered.

    Thanks.

I'm really not concerned about after graduation, but for the next year while still in school.

If the child is still in college, check with the college. Many have a variety of health care plans available to students.

    One such offering is: http://www.acsa.com/plans/healthapp/

    Another is: http://www.studentshealthinsurance.com/ver3_plans.html

Assurant's name seems to pop up several times in these sites.

Aetna also sells student and "new graduate" heath policies.

In general- it appears most cover a limit of something like 50K in expenses.
