Default How About a POLITICS subforum

    Tom,
All the political discussions we have had doesn't really fall under the idea of a "Lounge."
How about having a thread titled, POLITICS, under "Miscellaneous Stuff?"
I see useful exchanges of ideas and conversations developing about Obama's decisions, appointees and other matters.

Eeewwww. Politics and religion invoke some very serious emotions, not just from me. Do we really want to test those waters fully? I like a good fight but this may not be the place as we already know how polarized the election was. lol

If there were a politics sub-forum and you don't like it...don't go in there. That way all the political talk is out of the other sub-forums.

    I like it.

    Kevin,

It's like a car wreak, you can't look away. Plus, I am a moderator and would have to chase all of the post that members would flag because they feel they are inappropriate. I don't mind being moderator I do not like being baby sitter.

Eventually someone will say something to someone that will be offensive in their opinion or a personal attack will happen out of frustration.

So do we allow any language or comment in this thread and tell people if they do not like what they see go away and don't come back? Even in the election thread there were complaints and the title of the thread warned you about the content.

Should not be a forum or thread that allows improper language. That's just asking for trouble, where do you set the limits of propriety? Damnit!!

I like it, but since we are Americans, it would have to be moderated. Go censorship! If this were almost any other country, there wouldn't be a problem with it.

Alert- internet financial/personal data scam at some Obama acceptance speech link. See story following: http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/11/...yber_scam.html

Re politics subforum, perhaps Ms. Piggy may have had some parameters or particulars in mind for scope and direction.

While it might be beneficial for local citizens to engage in discussions/forums regarding hopeful improvements in the broad range of American public policy, what's the chance of that happening? The topic sounds so dry, it probably turns off 90%, ok 95% of the public. Was it like this years prior to writing the American Constitution? Underlying Patrick Henry, Tom Paine, the Federalist Papers, Franklin, Adams, Jefferson, etc was it the same old, same old with the rich and powerful southern landowners and northern businessmen making all the decisions, no matter what the public discussion was?

To motivate citizens to action, doesn't it normally require a well publicised issue that really upsets the public - a tea tax, a war based on a lie? Even then what are the best ways to constructively focus that concern or anger? Amazingly, despite the ending administration's lies and National Socialist leanings, there has been only muted concern and a few mild and muted protests. Can the polls be right, that almost 30% of our population still like and support Bush and his policies?

Beside the Berkeley, Madison, Santa Monica's how many local communities have venues/ groups to discuss and research existing public policy or other public concerns? I suppose an obvious answer is asking, how do any existing groups, charities, businesses get started-by highly committed, disciplined and motiviated citizens. Can the enthusiasm for "change" generated by the last election be translated or realized into more specific and substantive demonstration projects or proposals across the country? As far as Obama is concerned, has this process already occurred, or should it?

Is hope just another word for nothing left to lose?

I will think about adding a political subforum, but one of our moderators would have to agree to keep an eye on it. I'll see if anyone is willing.

    To tankrat who said:

You have to understand we deal with people reporting posts all the time that they are offended by (including miss piggy).

It's not the content that we would be worried about, it's the bashing and sometimes offensive remarks aimed at other members and/or political leaders during the heat of battle. If you were the target of these remarks you would not appreciate it and would likely complain or retaliate - and that's when the forum would fall apart. We are not new at this.

There is a reason that this forum is one of the most civil and respected online, and we'd like to keep it that way. That doesn't mean we won't create a political forum, but understand that moderating is not meant to censor content, but rather a way of keeping things on a civil and professional level.

I will see if we can find someone to moderate a political forum. I would prefer that it was one of our current moderators (spaf ) but I would consider others. It would have to be someone we all respect, trust, is not overly partisan, and has the time to spend on something like this.

I take umbrage at you mentioning my name as a complaintant. I thought it was anonymous.

In addition, my complaint had nothing to do with politics and I had no part in initiating what was just someone who took an opportunity to make a dirty joke in public that happened to be on our political thread.

Since the issue has become public I don't mind repeating the dirty joke so members can judge for themselves. It went something like this: "We know baldheaded men get more head"

Sorry but I just felt I needed to defend myself here. It's all Buster's fault - just kidding.
