Default TSP Talk Silver Coins / "Rounds"

i know some folks on here buy/collect silver 1oz rounds or bars, i wonder how much interest there would be for a tsptalk logo minted coin?

northwest territorial mint is a good place to buy silver in many different forms. they do a lot of custom minting too, like the challenge coins you find in the military. i priced out having a batch of silver coins made a while back. the premium over spot price was similar to an american eagle, i.e. if silver is $20 an eagle coin costs you $24.

the initial creation of the dies was expensive, but not as bad as i thought it would be. once the dies are created there is no additional charge to use them on subsequent runs of coins, just the premium over spot. the sales rep i spoke with quoted me around $2,000 for a set, depending on the complexity of the design. for the example i used a verbal description of a 'geometric design of a circle and arrow with script for the obverse with the geometric design repeated on the reverse' so as not to infringe on tom's copyright. the minimum run is 500 coins and the economy of scale eventually would spread out the cost of the dies over multiple runs.

for the first batch it would cost about $4 per coin for the dies + $4 premium over spot + $20 per ounce of metal. $28 per coin makes for expensive silver, but the 'cool factor' would be priceless. additional runs would only cost $24 per coin.

i collect tsptalk branded stuff and i regularly buy silver ingots at pawnshops so that is a match made in heaven for me. the problem is i don't have $14,000 laying around to order up a batch of coins or else i would do it. is anyone else interested in a tsptalk silver coin, maybe we could pool our resources and make it worth tom's while? he'd have to mark up those costs a little to cover labor and shipping/handling of course, but i'm game.

here is an example, just imagine the tsptak logo in place of the stagecoach:

ok then, no takers on the silver? i guess i'll just have to win it the hard way.

$30 a pop times 500, entertaining all bets, what you got?

i'll put up $500, that's one down and 29 to go.

i have a hard time believing there's not 30 tsptalkers who like silver and have $500 bucks to spare.

tightwads, duh, you can always melt them down to make bullets to shoot the zombie werewolf vampires when the apacolypse happens or else satisfy the troll under the bridge to let you cross when the food runs out or put them over your eyes to pay the ferryman.

Sorry, Burro I missed this post...

We'll have more traffic on Monday so let's see if there's any interest then, but I'm in, of course.

in for a penny, in for a pound.

the problem with purchasing precious metals is the weight never changes but the number of dollars required for the transaction fluctuates by the moment, so the $500 figure is speculative and maybe not the best measure.

the minimum order size from nwt existing bullion is 50 oz, indicating two tubes of 25 oz each, so that is the block of silver shares we are talking about, 25 coins. the minimum order for a custom mint job is 500 oz so we are looking at 20 folks willing to contribute equal dollar amounts for a tube of 25 silver rounds each. that's like 1.5625 pounds of silver which is equal to 6.25 sticks of butter, except you can carry 6.25 sticks of butter worth of silver around in your pants and it won't melt unless you want it to. that's a good thing for the pants budget.

25 oz x $22.03 per oz + $4 per coin original die fee + $4 over spot equals about $750 per tube of 25 coins, today. the price will vary tomorrow.

that's ok, all it takes is 20 folks to pay the same price per block of 25 coins on the day of transaction. i'm in. tom's in. james is in for at least one. that's only 16 or 17 more to go.

keep in mind the only money i will touch is mine when i send it to tsptalk, and the 25 coins i get in return. tom is a businessman, who better able to handle the transaction? burro = 1, tom = 1, james = 1 or 2. who's next?

This probably needs to be in a different thread (with different title obviously) to gain some attention, but getting 20 people interested may be ambitious no matter what - unless there are silver bugs out there.

ok, don't youns all come crying to me when there's no more tsptalk silver left.

if you think the premium is bad now, just wait.

my target is 500 oz of custom minted rounds. and i'll get it. i know this because so long as i keep trying i have never failed to reach the goal. that's not to say i have reached every goal, just that i havent failed yet in the pursuit.

i've won cups and caps and pens and sock monkeys before, but from here on out if you want to play you got to pay, in silver. preferably tsptalk silver, but i'll settle up for any old ounce.

bunch of dang willy nillys anyways, sitting around arguing with yourself about how much tile to lay on the ground floor while bedrock slips away.

what the world lacks is visionaries. sorry for you.

The problem may be incentive. I'm guessing only a few of us would appreciate the "coolness" factor.

I might consider paying the overhead and just let people buy close to the spot price, but since it's not really a promotional campaign for us, and since so few would participate and it would likely only be folks who are already regulars on TSP Talk, it may not be worth it to me.

But you can count on me for 50 oz. and maybe more in the future if I decide to use the coins as an option for AutoTracker prizes.

Burro did you purchase a fan? Since you like to barter you can count me in on plunking down 500 bucks for a roll of coins if you throw in a TSPtalk tee shirt off your back.
