    Default OPM Data Breach

Has anyone here received an email , pin number, letter, etc. regarding the data breach and related identity protection? How do you know if it is valid i.e. before you provide any info, etc.? Who was it from and what was the website?

I was notified yesterday that I should sign up for the provided identity protection.

I received an email prior to the notification of what to look for to make sure the notification email is legit. I don't have access to the email at the moment. One thing I remember is the email said to not click on any links, rather, manually enter the Web address and PIN into a browser.

Treasury Dept sent out this info:
OPM Data Breach (Updated June 11)

    Page Content
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) recently became aware of a cybersecurity incident affecting its systems and data that may have exposed the personal information of current and former Federal employees.

Beginning June 8 and continuing through June 19, 2015, OPM will be sending email and U.S. mail notifications to current and former Federal employees potentially impacted by the incident. Email notices will be sent from opmcio@csid.com. Standard letters will be sent to individuals for whom OPM does not have an email address.

The communication will contain information regarding services being provided at no cost to individuals impacted by the incident, including credit report access, credit monitoring, identity theft insurance, and recovery services. Additional information will be made available beginning at 8 a.m. CST on June 8, 2015 at www.csid.com/opm.

I received a notice as well, with the personally named notice and pin code, ... but I think the point being made is that the notices (at least what I received) did not come from a .gov address. It says it's from "OPM CIO" and the address is "opmcio@csid.com". I did not receive anything (addressed specifically to me) from a verifiable US Government address, yet. I took a look at the commercial webpage, but took no action and provided no data, yet.

my agency held a conference call regarding the issue and one of the concerns was not to publically divulge the email address from which your notification comes from as those can be easily "spoofed". also there was discussion about the hard copy snail mail letters that some are getting and not to describe them either, as both email and letter contain info that could be exploited in the wrong hands.

my agency also sent out a sample copy of the letter, and the actual ones to individuals i have seen are just like the example.

my guess is if you call the toll-free number your call gets immediately directed to a call center in china where the first question you are asked is 'what is you ssn#'.

they got all of us. got my notice today, as did another colleague. and yes, I got pre-notices about the notification that would be forthcoming and how it would be addressed.

i took the whole pre-notification conference call process as an insider stock tip. one of the funny questions was 'so my free bulletproof credit monitoring subscription is good for 18 months and then expires, what happens if my identiity gets stolen in 5 years because my information is out there now and the internet never forgets'? i thought that was a good question.

then some jackazz chimes in, 'they got us at target the other christmas ago, and now they got us at work, don't worry sometime in the next 18 months you will get hacked again and you will get another free 18 months of monitoring'. i thought that was a good answer.

also, i am buying all the stock i can afford in credit protection service companies because i think they are going to have a lot of work in the future.

Now there's an idea, invest in the protection services, they'll be in business from here to eternity. I was reminded a few days ago, that I should have already signed up for credit monitoring, thanks to the health insurance co breach awhile back. that notice, which I had laid aside and forgotten about, says I have til Sept 15 to sign up for free monitoring services. Oh boy. who will make me an offer next month?

the thing i liked most about the credit protection measures they offered me was the 'identity restoration' feature. i signed up for identity restoration first thing. at first i like that it said '....tity', then i liked that i can get a free wipe clean. i need identity restoration and now it is free!

yes, make me joe smith or something, i don't care, let's just start over, ok?
