As a retiree whose federal data has been hacked repeatedly for the agency I worked for, and OPM, I can't help but be concerned. I can't help but think that there are some nefarious people out there looking to cause a whole bunch of trouble. I haven't heard a pee[ from OPM yet. When I do I'd like the email to read:

Dear FS. We fired all the idiots who allowed this happen. We are reissuing you a new SSN and a new identity (pick whatever name you like). Your credit will be monitored for life at our expense. Thank You for your patronage. OPM.

They're making their money from the companies/.gov that are paying them to provide the service to those who are affected by the breach. the companies/.gov that supposedly ran secure enough it that we could feel safe having the company/.gov protect all that important information about us that they supposedly keep safe for us. they want everything electronic these days, giant databases, fewer access points due to fewer but bigger databases, so much to gain from one access point that gets successfully hacked. yummy, as Boghie would say.

I got a personal one, not acted on yet, from OPM CIO [opmcio@csid.com] which is obvoiusly not the OPM CIO. That persons signature element appears as:
    Donna K. Seymour
    Chief Information Officer
    U.S. Office of Personnel Management

Whatever, other e-mails I could try to find about this lead me to believe every security clearance form you ever filled out has been stolen too. I thought it was OF 62 but looks like it is OF 83 now. I need to drag one out and look at it. Think of all the info you needed to give about everyone you ever knew.

CSID | 1501 S. MoPac Expressway | Austin, TX 78746 is the address given. If you try to find out about the company or what CSID is an acronym for you get among others Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy. Just saying.

I still liked one of the first ones I got "the head person, the deputy head person and senior management are doing their best to ensure we are protected" They are.
A person I work beside sent the e-mail from OPM CIO [opmcio@csid.com] to our IT people as a phishing suspect. The junior IT person at HQ (contractor probably) said it is all OK and click on all the links.

The CSID e-mail was sent two days ago. It was 83 e-mails back and hard to find. Almost seems as if my work e-mail is being spammed by managers trying to cover their...employees I guess.

OK, FWIW I found the e-mail I was tring to quote. Sent 6/5/15.

"The Department takes the safety, security, and privacy of our workforce very seriously and the Secretary and Deputy Secretary have mobilized a team of senior leaders from across the enterprise to ensure that our staff has the information and resources necessary to understand the incident and protect themselves."

Define "our staff". I bet it doesn't include me or any other worker bee.

This is the email we got from the NASA CIO. Hope it helps.

I have not been notified yet, but I'm guessing mine will be coming via snail mail since I'm retired from government service. Now I'm just a contractor.

Maybe it's a good time for the government to offer an amnesty program for domestic hackers and put them under supervisors that can understand there out of the box thinking, as if that can happen.

I got my notice today and followed the instructions provided in the previous notices for my protection. Hmmmm, how safe is anything anymore?

FWIW, I suggest you "freeze" your credit reports. Google freeze credit reports for more information.

This will not solve every problem/issue that may arise from this data breach, but freezing your credit reports is good start.

I got tired of waiting for my email/letter. I was getting more and more nervous about possible identity theft.
So I called the CSID number and pressed "1", to get a live person. (Yes, I know the recording says to press "1" if you already had a letter but if you press "2" you will only get a recording.)
I then asked them for my PIN. After providing my SSN, they gave me my 12 character alpha-numeric PIN. I logged into the website, put in my PIN, and was signed up in just a few minutes. No negative reports. All clear. I felt a lot better.
As to them providing me with the PIN over the phone...that seems a bit sketchy, and maybe they will be cracking down on that as time goes on. But for me, I skipped to the front of the 4MM person line and got signed up, so I am happy!

Burro ... You were right on!!

Uscfan ... Who did you provide your SSN to? If they didn't have that information ... they do now. It seems like this data should be sent through the US Mail ... not trying to be old school or paranoid. At least there are some fraud protection laws covering the use of the US Postal Service.
