Assuming one has access to the internet or a large book store.

Starting out. I like unbiased authors that are meat & potatoes and easy to read.

There are a lot of investing books in the "Dummies" series by good authors.

I would also check out financial/investing books by Suze Orman.

    www.amazon.com / www.BarnesandNoble.com / www.suzeorman.com

After Suzie Orman's latest fiasco on speaking about women's finances, I'd stay away from her. It was more of a talk about "unleashing your inner Goddess" rather than actual finances.

Was this part 1 or part 2 of the Goddess thingy?

I have not followed much of her in order to get a good look see at how she goes about her insights/Goddess thingy. LOL

I like the magazines and the web base stuff.

Buisness Week, Smart Money, and Forbes. Read the guys that Robo posts. I have them saved to my favorits. I read Tom and Trader Fred every day. I read some Cramer online.

For chart stuff I read www.stockcharts.com
Socrates: "Democracy, which is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder, and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequaled alike."

I like using the following sources of information. All except the WSJ are free. I would also recommend a book called, “Jim Cramer’s Real Money” by Jim Cramer. I enjoyed reading it and it helped me. Have a great day and good luck with your TSP investments!

    http://www.bloomberg.com
Bloomberg is a great 24/7 source of market info. Their website tracks the American, Asian and European markets. They also have a cable TV channel.

http://money.cnn.com/ This is a good resource for market info.

http://www.tsptalk.com/ This is a good source. Many of the users paste various articles and charts that are useful.

http://online.wsj.com/public/us The Wall Street Journal is the most informative market news I have found anywhere, but it’s not free. I usually pick one up when I’m traveling, but I’m too cheap to buy the subscription.

All of Harry Dent's books. His website is www.hsdent.com. Suggest reading the "Key concepts" first before reading anything else.

Stan Weinstein's "Secrets For Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets"
Very good book on technical analysis

    Willian J. O'Neil "How to make Money in Stocks" The C A N S L I M system
which means evaluating a stock the it's Current earnings, Annual Earning, New products, Supply/Demand, Leader/Laggard, Institutional sponsorship and Market direction.

    Kenneth L. Fisher "Super Stocks"
A different way to evaluate stocks based upon Sales/stock price ration and Margin analysis.

PS: These are not only for a novice but for all. I've read each one of these many times and continue to re-read them.

I am just starting my search for more material also. In doing so I found this "Top 10" list of books on About.com. It looks pretty good, very comprehensive, and I'll likely order some of them soon.

About.com's Investing for Beginners site also seems to offer a lot of information, and I've always admired about.com in general for what seems to be honest objectivity on many other subjects.
