A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily IZVESTIA published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse."

The paper said Panarin's dire predictions for the U.S. economy, initially made at an international conference in Australia 10 years ago at a time when the economy appeared strong, have been given more credence by this year's events.

When asked when the U.S. economy would collapse, Panarin said: "It is already collapsing. Due to the financial crisis, three of the largest and oldest five banks on Wall Street have already ceased to exist, and two are barely surviving. Their losses are the biggest in history. Now what we will see is a change in the regulatory system on a global financial scale: America will no longer be the world's financial regulator."

When asked who would replace the U.S. in regulating world markets, he said: "Two countries could assume this role: China, with its vast reserves, and Russia, which could play the role of a regulator in Eurasia."

Asked why he expected the U.S. to break up into separate parts, he said: "A whole range of reasons. Firstly, the financial problems in the U.S. will get worse. Millions of citizens there have lost their savings. Prices and unemployment are on the rise. General Motors and Ford are on the verge of collapse, and this means that whole cities will be left without work. Governors are already insistently demanding money from the federal center. Dissatisfaction is growing, and at the moment it is only being held back by the elections and the hope that Obama can work miracles. But by spring, it will be clear that there are no miracles."

He also cited the "vulnerable political setup", "lack of unified national laws", and "divisions among the elite, which have become clear in these crisis conditions."

He predicted that the U.S. will break up into six parts - the Pacific coast, with its growing Chinese population; the South, with its Hispanics; Texas, where independence movements are on the rise; the Atlantic coast, with its distinct and separate mentality; five of the poorer central states with their large Native American populations; and the northern states, where the influence from Canada is strong.

He even suggested that "we could claim Alaska - it was only granted on lease, after all." Panarin, 60, is a professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and has authored several books on information warfare.

Sounds like he's reliving the 60's again.

West coast with its Chinese population??? Hello! I'm Asian, and I know there aren't that many Asians in the US, and there are more Hispanics on the west coast than Asians of any sort. Hispanics in the South? Er, the South has lots of whites too. Atlantic with it's distinct and seperate mentality? Looks like he couldn't think of anything that fit except they are Martians. Canadian influence in the North - don't tell that to Montana and Maine. Large American Indian populations in the Plains states? Where are those? He's seen too many Cowboy and Indian movies, I guess. Plus American Indians are about as united and similar as the Asians are (Let's get the Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese into one room - lol).

It appears this analyst is looking at Russia's own ethnic populations and mirroring them on the U.S. You know, Mongols, Koreans, Japanese (Kuriles) and Chinese (he probably thinks they're all Chinese, right haha) to the SE, Muslims to the SW, Western Europeans to the West....sounds like he's predicting a further breakup of Russia. Someone's been watching too much anti-US propanganda, or it's a huge case of wistful thinking tinged with the hope of making our problems look worse than theirs.

As for Alaska, I may not like Govenor Palin, but I am certain she and the First Dude won't let no Ruskies take her State away.

It would be amusing when negotiating with the Russians because they have such *wrong* ideas about the U.S., except the mistaken frame of reference on the other side of the table not only starts to grate, but their unsolicited advice on how we should fix things is totally useless.

The political power (Putin) of the Soviet Union.....errr Russia, has already started a new cold war. The Soviets currently have warships down with our new friend Chavez. It's a lot of cold war rhetoric, ignorance and Putin wanting to test obama. Not a good combination regardless.

    .

    Haaaaaahaaahhaaa.

    He doesn't know us.

We may bicker a bit now and then- but we have some things his country will never have-

    A 2nd Amendment- and

A bunch of Americans - who will fight like dogs and cats with each other, and then united like bulldogs to repel anyone who tries to mess with us.

He obviously missed the feeling in this nation following Sept 11th. You won't get us to break apart.

(Oh, and I CAN see Russia from here.... by satellite, and by Aurora airplane.

They won't mess with us, we've got Palin sitting in his backyard with little
else to do but give them the "stink eye" and the "mean-mug". Give her just
one good reason to walk across that pond and she'll be kicking Russians in
    the Putin.

Thumbs up Re: Russian analyst predicts decline and breakup of usa

It sounds like Putin may have putin the guy up to writing this 'wishful thinking' theory. I have heard/read some sorts about the U.S. not being the dominate financial power it has been in the past. The thinking was that eventually Europe would take over this function. Also that Russia, China and the middle east would pact against the U.S. That part may become true! They are surely not our friends anyway! Happy Turkey to All! Happy Thanksgiving to all the new turkeys in the Whitehouse also! May they eat well and become wiser!!!!!

Aye, we do bicker among ourselves but we can let a couple of banks and an auto maker fail and we survive. Capitalism wins out because someone else comes along and sucks up those loss resources and produces anew. Communism is just a constant, slow recession. We have learned how to live with volatility... and come out stronger, and hopefully, wiser.
