Equifax used the word 'admin' for the login and password of a database
    https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/14/equi...-database.html

    • "After some guesswork, cyber information security firm Hold Security found personal employee information including names, emails, and Social Security equivalents.
    • Equifax promptly shut down the website after news of the research broke.
    • Equifax sank deeper into a controversy over its handling of a data breach that could affect 143 million people, with the FTC confirming Thursday it is investigating.

Unlike many reporting fees , was able to active credit freeze for free. For both myself and my fiancée All cost zero dollars. Might depend on the state you live in. By the way there are four credit reporting agencies not three.

I understand Equifax is free. Here in Ohio it is $5 per freeze except for Equifax.

I haven't done it yet since I have two companies watching so far, but plan on doing it sometime this week.
May the force be with us.

House Finance Committee seeks information from traders about questionable Equifax options activity
    https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/20/hous...-activity.html

    • "The committee is looking for a possible explanation for the spike in Equifax options trades in August, weeks before the massive cyberbreach was publicly disclosed.
    • Trading in Equifax options was unusual because they are normally lightly traded.
    • The transaction could have resulted in millions of dollars in profit based on Equifax's recent trading price.

Yet...so many believe we need less government regulation. This is exactly why regulation is enacted: to protect citizens against incompetence and corruption.
    _____________

For weeks, Equifax customer service has been directing victims to a fake phishing site
    https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/20/1...ity-monitoring

"Earlier this month, hackers broke into Equifax's servers and stole 143 million people's personal information, including their Social Security numbers. In response to the attack, Equifax set up a website — www.equifaxsecurity2017.com — for possible victims to verify whether they're affected. Because the process involves sharing sensitive information, consumers have to trust they're entering their data in the right place, which can be tricky because the breach-recovery site itself isn’t part of equifax.com. If users end up on the wrong site, they could end up leaking the data they're already concerned was stolen.

Today, Equifax ended up creating that exact situation on Twitter. In a tweet to a potential victim, the credit bureau linked to securityequifax2017.com, instead of equifaxsecurity2017.com. It was an easy mistake to make, but the result sent the user to a site with no connection to Equifax itself. Equifax deleted the tweet shortly after this article was published, but it remained live for nearly 24 hours.

    ...

Further research revealed three more tweets that had sent potential victims to the same false address, dating back as far as September 9th. These tweets have also since been deleted.

Big changes coming for credit firms in wake of Equifax hack, CFPB director says
    https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/27/big-...ctor-says.html

    • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray says Equifax, TransUnion and Experian are going to get embedded regulators.
    • Fallout continues from the Equifax scandal, in which up to 143 million Americans had personal data exposed due to a breach discovered on July 29.

Now comes the test for us little people.

Equifax CEO to collect $90 million: report | TheHill

Equifax CEO to collect $90 million: report

Headline says it all. Do we understand that our representatives, who vote our shares as pension fund administrators, (or our unanswered calls for votes as participants in mutual funds,) select/allow people on Boards of Directors who form Compensation Committees, which agree to egregiously obscene compensation contracts? Don't hang the CEO in effigy. Go tar and feather the Directors and bonfire the in-crowd administrators.

"In his testimony, Smith laid the blame on a faulty scanner for not flagging the vulnerability on March 15 and on a single Equifax staffer responsible for mishandling patches on March 9. He did not name the person. "

The story is still breaking. I suspect the linked website will be updated as the story develops.
