Thread: Gov employees - chopping block

This one I find most disturbing:

Federal retirement benefits likely target for GOP

    PIOnline : Subscription Center

This was from about 2 years ago, but have seen on multiple sources that The House will try to push this through and now they don't have to worry about an Obama veto.

"Federal workers hired before 2012 contribute 0.8% of their salaries to the $412 billion Federal Employees Retirement System, Washington, while those hired in 2012 or later contribute up to 4.4%, ...Under the direction of House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., the budget called for federal workers to contribute up to 6.35% of their salaries to their defined benefit plan, and for newer workers to be only in a defined contribution plan."
"People participating in the CSRS would see their contributions rise to 12.5% from the current 7%. "

So basically everyone faces a 5.5% pay cut.
And just FYI...FERS is totally solvent, unlike CSRS. FERS is not just fully funded. Its running a HUGE surplus. An example that pension plans run properly can work. GOP can't have that happen.

Ronald Reagan, who was in the GOP, setup FERS.

So why have Republicans been so gung ho about doing away with FERS the past few years? Prevented only by determined congressional Democrats and the inevitable Obama veto.

Especially since it is not only fully funded but actually running a large surplus.

That article is from 2011, it didn't happen. It is unlikely they would eliminated FERS because any changes they make to FERS or CSRS retirement systems would also apply to them.

They did increase the employee retirement contribution for new hires starting in 2013 & 2014 and beyond. Contribution Rates Updated

I know the article is from 2011. The only reason it didn't pass was because the Senate was still Democratic, and they didn't even bring the House Bill to kill FERS to a vote.
After 2012 the GOP held both chambers but didn't have 2/3rds majority to override any Presidential Veto so they dropped it...until now.

So when you hear that Republicans have a long list of legislation that has been stymied for years, that they now hope will pass, this is likely to be a big one.

Even Steve Bannon, Trumps main advisor, said that they have to fix the fact that there are 9 Million more gov't employees than there are manufacturing workers.
Of course he's banking on his flock to be too stupid to know there are only about 2.6 Million Civilian Federal employees. Down 20% from the Reagan days in the late 80's.
With Military its a combined 4.1 Million, down from 5.3 Million in the 1980's.

The vast majority are State, County, Local Gov't that the WH and Congress have nothing to do with, including any funding.
Number of Government Employees Now Surpasses Manufacturing Jobs by 9,977,000 - Breitbart

And the rationale of "They (Congress) won't do it because it affects them too" holds not water, because it seems it would apply only to new Congressional's, but even if it weren't, nearly all Congressional's are millionaires, coming from business backgrounds. When their terms are up, they can go back to making millions in the same industries they left and likely helped legislatively during their congressional period. And the premise holds no water because House Congressional's already wrote the bill.

The fact that Trumps Propaganda Chief is already laying out the "Fake News" of 9 Million more Gov't employees, hoping the sheeple think that's all Federal Employees that Trump needs to reduce, and the House saying they have a long list of bills that can now pass (including that 2011 FERS RIP Bill) should be cause for alarm.

Default Gov employees - chopping block

It's all why my mind set, my attitude, is that I am preparing for being fired for political stupid reasons by crappy bosses (I have five bosses literally); or that my retirement pension will be gutted before I reach 56 (mra) or 60. Too many ways to screw up a federal employee who already is stuck in red tape hell. Many days there are just not enough employees to make the system work.

Everyone who has any talent at all has left the government system. Every single time we get a young talented engineer, who does not have some obvious discriminatory background (handicapped, racially not favored, etc) they leave.

What these bozo's fail to realize is that compared to the real world federal employees are paid less than their counterparts. The only thing that makes government service worthwhile are the benefits and longevity. Take away the benefits and reduce the pay how will they get anyone to hire on and replace those that retire? Right now we have a hard time keeping newly hired engineers from leaving and going to industry because of pay.
May the force be with us.

The politicians realize those facts. They are playing to the public's (and even some federal employees') ignorance.

The key is to know exactly which group the “THEY” are.

Private companies want everything contracted out especially engineering projects.
