Had the gunman not been tackled coming out of the bathroom, that could have been a bloodbath.

Job well done. They'll be guests at the WH soon and should definitely be getting some serious medal hardware.

I find this a fascinating story !!! I'm not a member of the "Political" thread, and I don't want to be...BUT...The Wife and I are discussing/debating this story...

We'll learn more of the details later, but I'm reminded of that recent Marine commercial you see on TV : "Which way would YOU run ?" Granted...none of them involved were Marines...but what IS it that makes "Americans" run TOWARDS trouble ? Yeah, there may be a Brit, and a Frenchman involved, too...but why do the Americans generally say "Screw this !!! I ain't gonna die THIS way !!!" Can you say "Flight 93" ?

Yeah...sometimes, my Country and its people, and political candidates, embarrasses me...but other times ? I'm proud to call myself "American" !!!

I think 9/11, and school shootings in the past 20 years changed how many of us envision how "situations" will evolve. In today's world we now know that in such a situation the death of many is the likely outcome. It used to not be that way.

IMO, that's a big reason why law enforcement takes situations much more seriously these days, and gets accused of being overzealous. It's their job to protect and they have to assume the worst.

It's fortunate that trained military personnel were right there. Of course some civilians have the personality type to confront and subdue a terrorist, but many would panic and freeze.

Studying how people under extreme stress react and perform is fascinating to me. In the case of law enforcement and the military the job draws the right personality type.

I agree...doesn't belong on the restricted Political thread...

But, in the "Big Picture" of things, "Good" is a relative term...

The 4 who thwarted the terror attempt have already received awards from French President Hollande. These days with an increased terror threat means that we are all potentially soldiers for freedom and against terrorists. High praise goes to those who give a damn and get involved.

Definitely a great story with a good ending.
Not to take away from this thread but back to back courageous stories.
The citizens who apprehended the guy who shot the Louisiana Trooper as well, although with a tragic ending for the Officer.

Pennsylvania mother ate twigs, drank own urine on journey to save family, sister says | Fox News

However, things began to turn south when the road became covered in snow.
now this is a sick joke because the road heads generally south. funny reporter, hope you get stuck and see how you like it.

Klein was starting to get exposed to the elements and had run out of food and water. Haase said that’ s when she turned to twigs and her own urine to stay hydrated. Haase added that Klein hiked for nearly 30 miles for 30 hours straight, eventually finding an empty cabin and some blankets to try and stay warm.
when was the last time you ate twigs to stay alive, huh?

so before anybody gets any bright ideas about dirty humor or anything, i'm just going to say this: stand down. this woman is a hero. for lots of reasons.

i grew up in that general vicinity and as fate would have it, i've been down that exact same road. i know the landmarks she passed by, know that sign, know that building, know that road. and it can get you anytime, conditions change in a heartbeat, but to do that in a freezing winter storm is a real trick. how many of you can walk 30 miles in 30 hours in a life or death crisis across that country to try to save your family? her hope of living was gone, but she kept walking out of hope anyways, for other lives. now that is something that deserves respect.

forget about the how that situation happened, none of that matters at the point when it's time for something to be done, and think about the response to the situation. it was a family decision. there are two important questions here: 1) would you do this? and 2) could you do this?

now that takes faith. and confidence. and reason, and skill, and desire. hat's off. stand down. and if any of you make fun of her for drinking pee i will drive out there wherever you are and kick your ass.
