well, on the bright side, the new replacement laptop you buy will already have win10 pre-installed so no need to worry about that pesky upgrade no more.

sure do hope you backed up your photos to the phone though, before the fates punished you.

Got the new cheap laptop Wednesday and finally getting around to firing it up. Demands I sync with every folder in every email account and demands password every time. Will not see shared files on home network. Slower than my grandmothers (both dead for years) and has no copper network connection. I should have read the specs more closely but no RJ-45 connecter? Some menus for file manipulation are Win 2000 or so version and it refuses (as do win8 and xp) to acknowledge I am the ******* administrator. But hell, I can get to TSPTalk and get some of my emails. It will also send me to many media sites unbidden and instruct me to use the touch screen it does not have. Other than that, no worse than Win8.

Wow, that sounds really bad. I'm glad I don't do windows. I guess it's not just the OS but the hardware as well.

We have a guy in the office who's kid uses one of those Ethernet-to-USB adapters with their laptop because it is thin and doesn't have a real Ethernet port. He has been having problems with it disconnecting from the router and not coming back after going into sleep mode. It looks like wifi is your best bet with machines like this.

It's getting better with time, just as the win8 machine did. Just like the win8 and upgrade to 8.1 this one seems to have taken 48 hours or so to get done downloading updates and installing them. I got impatient and loaded office 16 while win10 was apparently still doing it's thing which I am convinced slowed things down even more.

A USB to ethernet adapter is in the future and every time the last three laptops I've owned go in to sleep mode they don't want to reconnect to wifi on wake up. Wireshark tells me they usually don't even ask and forcing a reconnect usually doesn't ask for a new DHCP lease or whatever. I know just enough to know I don't know. IT types I know say "just reboot the router". That is what they learn the first year, reboot the computer and then the router. Then see if you can blame it on transport. Sometimes it is the transport layer, like an unplugged cable.

Such is life when you buy cheap hardware. After three laptops in 7 1/2 years I consider them throwaway items. The biggest hassle is by the time you kill one you had it set up just the way you wanted.

Get the investment stuff out of the way first. Real life TSP is about 96% G and 4% C. Payroll allocation. Too busy and not paying untention. Missed a lot of C and S gains this year. Oh well, may retire next year.

A lot of discussion in the past about the ads you see in the forum above and below the posts. Ponderings by a few on what makes the bot give you a particular ad. Some attributed it to what forum members have searched lately. Others attribute it to what you have searched lately. I doubt the latter based on the ads.

FWIW her is what I have gotten while catching up on the forum after three days or so:

    John McCain ads in spanish
    Canon camera ads
    soylent drink
    Expedia Las Vegas
    Ron Paul gold
    Strayer University
    Nature Conservancy
    Samsung Galaxy en espanol
    Bitcoin trading
    Global Islamic Economy Summit
    JP Morgan asset management
    Yogi Berra collection
    Honda Civic
    Fry's food stores

    Hmmm. Interesting.

Karma got me. I made a snarky remark in another member’s thread about the cheap, cheesy, oversize Medicare card. Last weekend I washed my wallet for the first time in many years. A lot of paper things held up OK but not the Medicare card in the plasticine wallet holder. It pretty much disintegrated. Probably because so much was sticking out the bottom. Remember I said it was too big.

So I ordered a new one which may take 2-3 weeks to arrive. When it does arrive I will make several copies of the entire page, cut one of the copies out and have it laminated. You know that every time you see a doctor they are going to want to see the card out of the wallet. Some don’t like laminated cards because their copier has a hard time with them.

Another amusing thing was the few business cards I had in there puffed up like popcorn.

In the mean time I become a Medicare geezer in 11 days and will have no proof of insurance.

    PO,

Thanks for the insight. I better dig mine out since I need to have it I my wallet May 1st. I haven't signed up for Part B yet but will do it this weekend. Got some bad info and didn't do it when I applied for Part A.
May the force be with us.

This whole part B thing or pay more or lose current insurance sounds like the same thing I got when I retired from the AF. It's "free" but you have to enroll in TriCare Prime which is not free. Now to keep "free" Tricare for life I need to pay for Medicare part B. To have FEHP coverage in fed retirement it sounds like you have to get part B.

FWIW part B is costing me $402 per month. NOT the $340 advertised.

Wow that is a big difference. Maybe it has to do with Tricare.

I just wish the phone calls would stop for Medicare. But my wife needs to sign up for 2018 so I guess they won't stop for awhile. During my research on Medicare I asked SS if I needed Part B because I had health coverage (FEHB BC/BS). I was told no, so when I signed up for Part A I didn't sign up for Part B. I got a phone call from SS a few days later following up on why I didn't sign up for Part B . The nice lady said I got bad info and if I didn't sign up before August it would cost 10% per year if I waited. More research to try and get a handle on costs of keeping BC/BS or going Part A & B for both of us with an Advantage plan.

I forgot. You and I share the same birthday.
May the force be with us.

I thought the Part B was a little over $100/month based on what my mother pays. Sounds like you are subject to the Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), which means you must have had a really high income two years ago (2014 or 2015?).

Well, heck. I mis spoke. $420 per quarter. That's the way they bill it. $134 per month. Not sure where $340 came from. What I get for trying to multitask too much.

The rest stands as stated. I have to have part B to keep Tricare for Life and it sounds like I have to have part B not to get a penalty later if I let FEHB be supplemental. Sigh.

Grand kids are here for a week. Temperature here was 97°F. Quite a change for NH kids. Weather experts have said all week that tomorrow would be the first 100°F day. Now they have backed that off to 98°F. Too bad, kids needed bragging rights for school.

They were still in the pool all the time they were here today though the water temp is 69°F. In addition to the normal monitoring kids always need in a pool there was monitor the shade of purple lips thing going on. Gotta make em get out, wrap in a towel and sit in the sun for a few minutes.

Monday we are all driving to San Diego and Tuesday we get to go to Legoland. Wednesday we get to go to the Zoo and see aminals. Thursday we get to go to some beach. Should be a great time.
