I WAS managing my account, for the most part, and still got crushed in 2007. Ok, I got complacent at times and turned my head for a few months lettting it ride.............. That didn't help me out at all. I am on this site now to make sure a -29% loss doesn't happen again.
Ended 2011 with 4.3%. Well, at least it was positive.

EDIT: Not literally paralyzed physically. Paralyzed with fear. At least I didn't blow out my account. Last month I finally went positive on my 12 month rate of return and my balance hit new all time highs.
The same thing happened to me. I lost about 5% in 2008, missed most of the run up in 2009, but did manage a 4% gain. I was too conservative in 2010 and when I did step into the market, I lost money, ending the year with a 2.65% loss. I've decided to follow I_T, and hope the results are much better this year.

I must apologize for the above statement. It is incorrect. In 2007 I had a profit of 7.5%. It was 2008 that I lost 12.8%. I was going of fuzzy memory. My bad.
May the force be with us.

well, fuzzy memories are better than fuzzy mammaries, at least you got some.

i don't think i did that well, i'll have to check, got my can kicked on the big drop, buyin more and watching it disappear every two weeks, and then some.

just checked, tsp.gov annual statements sez:

    2010 +12.27%
    2009 +20.72%
    2008 -37.02%
    2007 +4.57%

who needs the vix when you got volatility like that right at home?

i remember getting that 2008 statement in the mail, couldn't even look at it. after that i switched to electronic delivery, why they gotta go sending me mean stuff like that anyways? now i have them blocked as spam and all the bad news just goes away.

I agree that the tracker is a fun tool but also reflects the real deal which is what it's all about. "2008" taught taught me a valuable lesson that I won't ever forget. This website with the tracker has been the best thing I've come across for my financial stability in my 30 yrs. of investing.

Are you a Burrocrat or an Ostrich?
I like TSPTalk and I think most people here are well-intentioned but if I followed their advice, I'd be hunkered down in my basement with a thousand cans of tuna fish.
