    Default Tr-ing Account Talk

Just getting started here. I've been in the TSP for a while, pretty much holding long positions since I started. Current allocation is approximately 20G 40C 20S 20I and DCA going into 50C 25S 25I.

    Spaf/Fivetear/fabijo,

Thanks! Good to be here. I wish I had something like this back in 1999. So here is what I've been doing the last few weeks:

Built charts for all the funds (except L) and I've been studying those and drawing channels, support points, etc. to trying and learn where the move indications are.

Checking the related indexes on Yahoo along with all the technicals and trying to understand how those can be used to make move decisions.

Watching several accounts and surfing the account talk to get a feel for what other members are doing and why.

I also try to catch Bloomberg radio on my way to work each morning, catching the latest news on the markets in the US and around the world, and trying to get a feel for how that affects the funds.

Result: I'm so confused! Just when I think I understand some small element of influence, another one comes along that may be stronger. Example, the dollar weakening against some of the foreign currencies lately seems to have boosted the I fund returns. But, how will up/down swings in those markets counter that? Ugh.

I'll keep hanging around and maybe some of it will rub off. One thing is for sure, I'm determined not to re-live 1999 - 2002.

Find a graph of the dollar and look at 1994 -'95. That will give you an idea of what the future holds. Nothing happens overnight and market noise covers a lot of things up - yes the I fund is doing great but look what happened in the Spring'06 when the hedge funds panicked. History is a great teacher.

Sounds like you are really on a steep learning curve. I disregard the negative comments here about monkeys, etc (especially since I've been an unlucky one, LOL). I think your recent efforts at trying to understand the market and indicators, etc. are the real reason this website is so good. It really gets you thinking.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks everyone for the words, sorry for the lack of communication for the last few weeks, had a small diversion to Iraq....

Seems like a lot of the reports lately are for a good month, so I'm still holding on my long position. I keep waiting for the sell signal in anticipation of the pull back that everyone seems to think is coming. Not smart enough to do any of the short term trading that others seem to be good at. Maybe some day....

Okay, obviously I haven't figured this out. Didn't follow Trader Fred advice and get out on the 13th. When things went down, I moved the 20% left in my G into the S and I on 3/1. Then things got worse and I panicked. Friday afternoon I went 100G, which of course did not take effect until Monday night, 3/5, the exact bottom. UGGG.

So I'm sitting on the sidelines hoping there will be a test of the recent low and an opportunity to get back in.

That would be too easy, wouldn't it? Sorry about your chin. There were reasons the markets were at all-time highs - they know more than I do.

For tracking purposes your move to 100% G fund counts for COB today, 3-09 because it was entered at 10:19 am EDT today. We cannot count your move to 100% G for 3-05 as stated in your account post. Read the rules on posting to your account that appears in sticky threads in the Member's Accounts forum.
