Thread: ripper's account talk

    Default ripper's account talk

I'm not exactly a newbie here (joined in '07), but finally decided to create my own account talk.

I'm a USPS FERS employee. I'll be eligible to retire at the end of this year at the age of 59 with 30 years of service. I plan on retiring then or shortly after.

I've learned a lot on this website. I hope to have more questions answered and maybe provide some interesting info in this thread.

Thanks for all that you do, Tom.

Since I'm not using my account talk for anything else, I decided to post trades from a system I'm following. Just doing this for my own benefit so that I can see the results of these trades when posted in public.

Just purchased SSO for $56.65. I expect this trade to last 1-3 days.

Not off to a good start doing this.
The day after I sold SH, I noticed that the signal wasn't to sell it, but a confirmation to hold it. If I had read it correctly, I would still be holding it and enjoying some nice gains.
I blame my error partially on being out-of-town on vacation. I wasn't paying as close attention to this as if I had been home.
Anyway, I'm still all cash and will post the next trade when it happens.

Ugh. Thought I had posted about this trade earlier but obviously I did not.
I also trade a longer-term system with SPY/SH. That system gave a buy for SH at the open on 1/4. As I previously posted, I misread the signal and sold my SH position early.
That system moved to cash after Friday's close and I would sell SH at the open on Tuesday if I was properly positioned.

My shorter-term system that trades SSO/SDS and UPRO/SPXU hit my stop but is still on a buy and could possibly give another confirmation for going long again.

Sorry for the confusion. I'll do my best in posting timely updates in the future. These systems have done pretty well in the past and I'd like to confirm that by posting the trades publicly.

    Thanks ripper,

It's nice to be the one reading trades instead of just posting them.

Maybe you could tell us a little about your system...how long has it been successful...etc.

Finally, maybe you can use the CODE tags to log your trades. I use a spreadsheet and post an image of it (when I get around to updating it .) The CODE tags would be easier; maybe I'll start using them too.

I only mention this in case you didn't know about them and how they can be used.

It (and/or spreadsheets) makes it easier for folks to see how we're trading.

But you may just want to keep doing it the way you started.

    For example:

    Code:
    01-01-15 LONG ABC AT 100
    01-01-15 SHORT BCD AT 200
Then the next trade, you could copy and paste the previous trades into a new post, then add the new trades to the list:

    Code:
01-01-15 LONG ABC AT 100...01-10-15 EXIT AT 150
01-01-15 SHORT BCD AT 200...01-11-15 EXIT AT 250
    01-12-15 LONG CDE AT 50
The code window allows for scrolling as well...

    Code:
01-01-15 LONG ABC AT 100...01-10-15 EXIT AT 150
01-01-15 SHORT BCD AT 200...01-11-15 EXIT AT 250
01-01-15 LONG ABC AT 100...01-10-15 EXIT AT 150
01-01-15 SHORT BCD AT 200...01-11-15 EXIT AT 250
01-01-15 LONG ABC AT 100...01-10-15 EXIT AT 150
01-01-15 SHORT BCD AT 200...01-11-15 EXIT AT 250
01-01-15 LONG ABC AT 100...01-10-15 EXIT AT 150
01-01-15 SHORT BCD AT 200...01-11-15 EXIT AT 250

    Thanks for the input, usuerque.

The shorter-term system is a combination of daily signals with an hourly signal to help with entry/exit points.
The longer-term system is a combination of weekly signals along with a daily signal.

Unfortunately, I'm only able to back-test it for one year. While it's certainly not enough history to confirm its performance, the past year wasn't too bad for testing it due to the volatility. In the past year, the ST system had a return of +29.2 while the LT system was +11.3%. I have more confidence in the LT system and should probably trade SSO/SDS with it, but I'll stick to non-leveraged ETF's for now.

Just wanted to give an update to my trading. I hope to do this every weekend, primarily to keep me committed to monitoring this.

I realized that referring to my trading models as Short-Term and Long-Term wasn't an accurate description, since the Short-Term Model will often hold trades longer than the Long-Term. So from here on, I'll refer to them as Aggressive and Conservative.

Due to a recent change in my daily schedule, there will be frequent times that I'll have limited access to the stock market during business hours. Therefore, my aggressive model will primarily be swing-trades with some amount of market exposure on a daily basis.

    Updated as of 1/29:

    Aggressive Model
    YTD return: +1.3%
    Current position: 50% UPRO @ $48.63 on 1/21

    Conservative Model
    YTD return: +5.7%
    Current position: Cash
