Right On DBA!!! She and Linda Ronstadt were good friends, and besides being greats in their own right, Nicolette sang beautifully in support of Neil Young in his Harvest Moon album. She and Linda Ronstadt also sang on a few other Young albums is my recollection. I guess I've have to pull the vinyl out of the closet and recheck that.

I have 3 guitars and tried to teach myself how to play on the internet. I was 50 years old and tried really hard for 4 years and basically gave up. You really need to play with someone or a band and a good teacher to do it. People think they can learn cords and that's it. HA! it's really hard. BUT if you have it and some folks do it is easier but it was hard fo me. I still have the American Strat, the Ibanez acoustic electric and a Spanish flamingo guitars and think every day that I should try again. I never failed in anything I tried until I tied to learn to play the guitar. And buy the way I don't give up easily as you can tell.note1.gif

Was driving around Nashville one day and asked a person how to get to the Grand Ole Opry. "Practice" was all he said. *rimshot*

well...I can tell you...I've tried three times in the past and each time I gave up within a week. It was too hard...always had problem wrapping fingers around the neck so I could not play a single cord and fingers hurt.

But I just bought a Keith Urban acoustic off of QVC because it was designed with less thick neck and strings advertised as "coated" so not so hard on fingers. My nephew , who plays, said he liked the strings.

So far I have been able to pick it up better, but have not had much time to play. Trying to get into habit of playing at least a few minutes a day. First day, I played for about an hour and I had dents on my finger pads for a day and sore for a few...so I am taking it easy. The one I have is a pretty blue jean blue color. So I match most of the time! Yes..I know...totally irrelevant! But its really nice, love the color, and sounds great!

Practice is the key! Wish my fingers would cooperate!

You have to develop callouses on your fingertips. Doesn't hurt so much after that.

nder Super Strat (Mexico), a Fender acoustic (Indonesia?), and a Les Paul Jr. (ch); made it most of the way through Guitar for Idiots, was able to play some tunes, then life got really busy and I got away from it. Like you, DBA, I need to keep one at arms reach and work at it again. I started to work on some Nora Jones, and just the first few notes sounded fantastic... need to get back into it, play along with some of my albums.

I'm a big blues fan and I have picked up the harmonica a few years ago and trying to self teach myself to play. I spoke to some that do play and they say to listen to those who play and try and imitate them. So I turn up some blues really loud and try to play along. I don't sound anything like them but I enjoy blow n and try n to play. I also go listen to live music when I can. If you enjoy stick with it and don't worry about what others think about how you play, your play n for you not them. Strom on DBA...

DBA I read you forum regularly but don't post much because I am learning from you and the rest; however, when it comes to guitars and the basses I can tell you that your fingers are going to hurt until you develop calluses and that take frequent playing. The "coated" strings you speak of is more to make the strings last longer than ease finger pain. Also acoustic guitars are going to be harder on your fingers because the strings are just harder to push but IMO they are the best to learn on because you don't need all the amps, pedals etc. If I can provide some advise, it would be to buy extra light strings and work your way up as need to higher gauge. Also playing a song you like makes learning more enjoyable. Start easy with songs that only contain a few chords that you already know how to sing then you can sing and learn to play at the same time.

Also there are a tons of websites that provide Guitar Chord such as "Ultimate Guitar" where you can grab the songs that show you where in the songs to make your chord changes. (google Guitar tabs or Guitar Chords) You do need to be careful as some of the songs are not very good but you will learn to weed them out. Most sites have a "star" rating for the songs that helps. As for paying with other there is nothing better to improve your skills but in case that's not an option, pull the song up on youtube and play with the original band. I do it all the time. Also look in you are for jams were beginners and experienced people just get together and play and no one is humiliated because they are starting out. As a matter of face most of the time the experienced folks help the newer players learn. Kinda like getting free lessons.

I always keep a guitar next to the couch so if I hear something on tv I like I can just grab the git and try to find it on the fret board. You'll find a lot of riffs and chords in songs are the same. Just in different keys.

Youtube also has free guitar lessons on every type of music, some from the artists themselves. You can play at your own pace or rewind it and try over and over. Heres one (skip the commercial) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRetzsF8ISM
