I know what you mean. The falling knives theory. The buy the dips theory does work until it stop working (repeating an oxymoron on my part). Truth is that when markets are overbought, they can stay that way for a long time. But overbought markets, can be brought down easier when they are overbought, by events such as Greenspan's testimony, China, IRAN, and so forth). This should be nonetheless a grat buying opportunity, but when? I hate to buy blindly, although one has to take some risks to make gains. I appreciate your response. Let's keep looking at indicators and news. And let us also consider the fine work that TSPtalk (Tom), TSP's Trader Fred, as well as others like Ebbnflow are doing, because these are wonderful tools that can provide profitable links to prosperity!

    Good information;
Market selloff: Year of the bear?

Fears of a slowdown in China and the U.S. spark a selloff. Is this just a correction or a sign of more bad news?

Jack Ablin, chief investment officer with Harris Private Bank in Chicago, agreed, saying the fact that durable goods orders were down is a sign of businesses continuing to hold back on capital investments, a development that he said is not new.
"Companies have been hoarding their cash. This is a continuation of a long string of disappointments from the corporate side. Businesses are being conservative," he said.
At the same time, Stine argued that the market was overdue for a correction. After all, the Dow and S&P 500 have each risen 12 percent in the past six months while the Nasdaq is up 17 percent. However, he added that the market could be in for a couple of rough days, if not longer, before things get better.
"The selloff could last for a while because we've had such a big runup over the past few months. This could feed on itself for a few days or few weeks," he said.
Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist with Standard & Poor's Equity Research, added that the market was long overdue for a drop like the one seen Tuesday. (read it all)

    JOHN SHINAL'S TECH INVESTOR
Tech investors: Ignore history at your peril
Commentary: Why stocks are likely to move lower over next 6 months

    By John Shinal, MarketWatch
Last Update: 6:28 PM ET Feb 27, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- As a reminder to investors, most economists are not predicting the end of the boom and bust cycles that have always been a part of the capitalist system.
The latest leg of the current bull market, which had pushed the Nasdaq Composite Index and other broad indexes pretty much straight up since August, has made it easy to forget that.
So has the glut of liquidity that for several years has helped power markets around the globe higher and led to a wave of private-equity buyouts in the U.S. that have helped prop up share prices here.
Cheap money, combined with a record run for U.S. corporate profit growth and bubble-like euphoria about China, had lulled investors into complacency of historic proportions.
Before Tuesday, it had been 45 months since the S&P 500 had suffered a one-day decline of 2% or more. During the past 75 years, such days have occurred eight times a year, on average.
Then came the market plunge, when we were once again reminded that things that are too good to last never do.
Investors who think this was a one-day correction should consider that averages usually revert to their long-term means. I'm not sure exactly how many 2% daily drops we'll see during the next several years as that occurs, but my best guess is "lots." (more)

I guess they can't run a antivirus or repair disk program, RESTORE and fix this GLITCH? What's up with that!
I guess we all know about this, but I like to RANT!

    AP
Swiftness of Dow Drop Due to Computers
Tuesday February 27, 6:25 pm ET Computer Glitch Causes Dow Jones Industrial Average to Fall Faster Than Normal
NEW YORK (AP) -- When the Dow Jones industrial average plunged to its low of the session Tuesday, it happened with incredible swiftness -- a matter of seconds -- because of a computer glitch that kept some trades from being immediately reflected in the index of 30 blue chip stocks.
Dow Jones & Co., the media company which manages the flagship index, said around 2 p.m -- just two hours before the New York Stock Exchange was to close -- it was discovered computers were not properly calculating trades. The company blamed the problem on the record volume at the NYSE, and switched to a backup computer.
The result was a massive swoon in the index that happened in the seconds it took Dow Jones to switch to its secondary computers.
"The market's extraordinary trading volume caused a delay in the Dow Jones data systems," said Dow Jones spokeswoman Sybille Reitz. "We decided to switch over to the backup system, and the result was a rapid catch-up in the published value of the Dow Jones industrial average." Spokesmen for the NYSE Group Inc. and Nasdaq Stock Market Inc. could not immediately confirm if all closing share prices were valid. A spokesman for the Big Board said it experienced "intermittent delays and are currently assessing the situation." The Nasdaq said it was "confirming" the closing numbers.(more)
