I work at the Biloxi VA Hospital and my main interest for being here is to try to get a hard asset fund available. I believe that the value of the dollar will be severely depreciated in the future and I would like the opportunity to preserve assets in precious metals and real estate.

I started with equal split investing in common stock index, small stock index, and international funds hoping that the international fund would provide some protection from inflation.

I have attempted to contact fund management but have received no feedback to date about my request for a hard asset fund option. Example fund showing a 5 year return of about 35% in link below:

Until something changes or we can get a hard asset fund, I have transferred everything to the international fund as of today. 100% into I.

Welcome to the Message Board WWWTRACTOR. I can't help you with the hard asset fund, sense I don't know what it is? Getting the TSP to add another fund is almost impossible, but best of luck.

You won't get a hard asset fund any time soon. The only funds which are here are those specifically allowed by Congress. It would take an act of Congress to get anything else added, and you know how hard THAT can be.

One of the beauties of the TSP is it's simplicity. We had just a "G" fund, and then a G, an F and a C, and then, a few years back, Congress allowed for an added I and S.

Personally, I would like to see an emerging market fund added. And yes, a hard asset fund (gold, silver) would be nice, but that one is a lot more volatile. But we can do quite a bit just with the funds we have now, if only Washington *(thrift board) would stay out of the way, and let us control our own futures.

At a minimum get the 5% match if available and max out the Roth IRA. Anything more to invest goes back to the TSP account.
