    Default Freakin Trojan (Symantec Sux)

My daughter got on the wifes computer last night and managed to pick up the "Personel Antilvirus" Trojen embedded on a web site.

She clicked on what looked like a windows warning bubble in the lower right corner, and it installed.

Afterwards we got continuious warning messages and a window simular to the symantec control panal.

My Symantec End Point Protection didn't catch it in real time, and didn't pick it up with a Full Scan.

Anyways I had to install an aftemarket Mal War program to get rid of the 18 embedded trojans. All in all it was about 8 hours of down-time. Luckily it didn't seem to spread to the rest of my network.

It's probably my fault anyways since I left admin permissions on my wifes logon...

That sucks. Thanks for sharing it... Reminds me that it might be a good time for to check my wife / kid's computer. They are bad at that stuff too.

I stopped using Nortons' a few years ago. I use McAfee, but I also like AVG antivirus. I run it concurrently with Webroot Spysweeper. The one thing I like about Webroot Spysweeper, and AVG is that, they check millions of websites, and if they've found malicious malware or spyware on a particular website such as the one your daughter clicked on, they will "BLOCK" that site, telling you there are damaging things on the site, and advise you to stay away.
Sometimes, an Antivirus is not enough in these days and ages. May I also suggest that you purchase an external HD and backup your Hard Drive, just in case. I have a 1 TB networked HD where I backup all 3 PC's in the house on a weekly basis, then turn it off. I also have a 1 Terrabyte HD connected via eSATA port on this pc, and back it up on a weekly basis.

In case of catastrophic failure, these PC's can be put back together again in a matter of hours, with minimal work involved.

Which aftermarket Mal war program did you use? I don't know who to trust...

Malwarebytes Anti-malware is a very nice program. It helped me with a couple things this past year my regular program Kapersky didn't resolve. Another is SUPERAntispyware. Both are free programs. SUPERAntispyware is a little annoying, gets on my nerves now and then with updates and whatnot. Malwarebytes runs in background, never comes front unless you ask it to. Watch there is at least one phishing/fake site that pretends to be SUPERAntispyware by misspelling the name. The real program has a ladybug-sorta looking icon that sits in the bottom righthand tray.

Free stuff is always better, and usually does not have huge ridiculous memory usage. I have been using Avast for years, and love it.
