Just a personal observation

ChemEng - I'm not here to take sides on this issue but only to say sometimes no matter what you do or say - it's like spitting against the wind.

First from CB:
I believe that "most" of the pols are pols, because they couldn't cut it in the real world and are brainwashed from an early age that they are smarter and know better than us unwashed working stiffs. They believe they are our Royality and we left that behind.

Now please realize that I really love this guy - but this is his core belief and so essentially all his 'political posts' will reflect this.

The MOST IMPORTANT thing to realize is that his motivation and true intention - is not to 'slam the politicians' but to take his stand against the injustices spread throughout the population. CB is not your wimpy rollover type of person - he's a fighter through and through and he's convinced that by either remaining quiet or not sounding the alarms - that he's essentially resigned to THE ENEMY and he's just not cut that way. As long as he has breath or life he will never give in to the enemy.

Now Birch:
He is a BORN AGAIN REPLUBICAN - and you surely know him well enough to know that he'd say just about anything.

So whatever it's worth - Don't feel like to have to defend yourself and all the more think you can convince them otherwise. I find it's best to just let them do their thing.

I do want to comment on the original intention of this Thread as I'm in the Midwest and I live with a very similar population.

The united effort of the population working together to do everything they could to look out for one another is a huge feature of folks around my area - and no doubt in Fargo ND.

The PROBLEM with the comparison however is totally unfair.
ONE IS PERHAPS THE MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE TO DATE - That forms quickly and allows little time to prepare. Our civilization is not able to fight off a Disaster of that Magnitude at this point - let alone back then.

On the Political Front - with Katrina I know for a FACT that FEMA did everything possible to avoid what happened. The Governor refused to let them take action - because in doing so he loses any power to deal with the matter himself. THAT IS THE TRUTH and that was the most underlying basis for what happened. Only after the fact was FEMA able to intervene. We can't let the Governor 'look bad' so FEMA took the blame.

The City is UNDER SEA LEVEL - and overwhelmingly the poor live in the lower areas.

In FARGO - We're dealing with a rising RIVER and they all know exactly what they are dealing with and what will happen if they can't contain it.

In that situation NO ONE is going to sit around and wait for the Government to come in to do the manual work needed. They all knew time was of the essence and they responded accordingly.

BUT - I think the overwhelming basis of your message was to applaud a population that works together to do whatever they need to do to protect each other - and DO THE RIGHT THING.

I'll let ya in on a little secret of mine. When I was dumb and young and didn't have any kids, I voted for Carter.

The shame of it all.

I guess it was because all my family, aunts and uncles, are yellow dog Dems. So it makes for some very interesting family reunions, cause only 4 outta 20 of us cousins are conservative. So I've had a lot of practice and sometimes must watch my tongue since family debates can get pretty lively, cause the 4 of us know what buttons to push. They still think the Dem party is the Dem party of the 60's.\

I’ll chime-in.

I lived on Pensacola Beach prior to Hurricane Ivan. I evacuated 2 days before the storm made landfall (Why - Because there was a frick’en storm coming!!). Upon return, my home was completely demolished and I lost everything except my fishing rods, rifle, and a basket of dirty clothes that I had taken with me. (It’s amazing how your mind works - You have a few minutes to decide what is valuable to you – I chose my fishing rods and rifle over everything else in my house – Oh well) I was one of 1000’s that lost their home from this horrific storm. In addition, my office was destroyed, my parent’s home was badly damaged and many of my friends/family/coworkers were also homeless. Hurricane Rita provided similar results near the Louisiana/Texas border. ($25 Billion in damage from these storms – Although this is 1/3 of the damage from Katrina, at this magnitude… who’s count’en?)

As a result of the hurricane, I received an SBA loan for $40K. (I got screwed on insurance – another story for another time) I received the loan more-so because I had just started an on-the-side internet business for Coaching Youth Sports but used a great deal of the money for replacing everyday necessities. (You know – shoes, toilet paper & cooking utensils - Not beer , whiskey & dope) Incidentally, the business failed but I religiously pay the monthly SBA loan payment.

My Point: This has been a very stressful time for our community but we have overcome and normalcy has returned. Very little of the 13 conditions listed in the original post of this thread occurred in our area. Like many residents, I built a new home, but further from the Gulf. Do any of you even remember Hurricane Ivan or Rita? I doubt it. Soon, you will not remember the on-going tragedy in North Dakota. BUT, we all remember Katrina. Why? Because it is the at risk population that was affected and they continue to require aid and support. Rather than getting-off their lazy butts and becoming part of the solution, they would rather complain about being mistreated and exhaust their efforts trying to obtain more hand-outs. (And we continue to appease them)

Incidentally, much of New Orleans is being repaired by illegal immigrants that have now moved their families into the downtown section(s). This is creating a whole-new-set of problems (See Thread – A Sign of Things to Come – post #2). It will be interesting to watch the demographics vs appeal of New Orleans over the next few years.

I tell my friends occasionally that the Dems of today are not like my parents who lived through the Depression of the 30s. The conservative Christians of many denominations...of the midwest. They were the conservative democrats who paid their bills, went to church and lived within their means. The dems of today...mostly are very liberal in their views in terms of social, marriage, spending habits, and depending on others. They basically have a social viewpoint! That's why I'm not a democrat. Where I used to work there were very very few of us who voted Republican....you could count them on one hand! I'm sure the dems there are lapping this Obama stuff up.
