A United Nations document on "climate change" that will be distributed to a major environmental conclave next week envisions a huge reordering of the world economy, likely involving trillions of dollars in wealth transfer, millions of job losses and gains, new taxes, industrial relocations, new tariffs and subsidies, and complicated payments for greenhouse gas abatement schemes and carbon taxes — all under the supervision of the world body.

Those and other results are blandly discussed in a discretely worded United Nations "information note" on potential consequences of the measures that industrialized countries will likely have to take to implement the Copenhagen Accord, the successor to the Kyoto Treaty, after it is negotiated and signed by December 2009. The Obama administration has said it supports the treaty process if, in the words of a U.S. State Department spokesman, it can come up with an "effective framework" for dealing with global warming.

A sad day for the Nobel Peace Prize, and a true insult to all previous Prize winners.

Exactly! That award used to mean something, but after Gore got it, all respect I had for it went right down the crapper.

What about when Arafat won it? It means nothing except an award for the corrupt now.

After some light research on the Nobel prize, I basically learned how ignorant I have been about it's relative importance. I had based my thoughts about the merits of the Nobel prize on news articles I've read over the years about people receiving this award. Then, concluding that the recipients must have done something exceptionally great to deserve such recognition. I never really thought about the award's process or who actually hands out these awards. It is probable that I was asleep or daydreaming in class when and if they taught anything about the origins of the Nobel Prize.

Although the "Nobel Peace Prize" is only one of several different categories of the Nobel prize, it is awarded by a committee of five people elected by the Norwegian Storting. This procedure was created and directed in Alfred Nobel's will.

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee is responsible for the selection of eligible candidates and the choice of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. The Committee is composed of five members appointed by the Storting (Norwegian parliament). The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway, not in Stockholm, Sweden, where the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and the Economics Prize are awarded."
http://nobelprize.org/nomination/peace/process.html The statutes of the Nobel Foundation restrict disclosure of information about the nominations, whether publicly or privately, for 50 years. The restriction concerns the nominees and nominators, as well as investigations and opinions related to the award of a prize.

The problem of the inventor's and scientist's social responsibility was taken up by Albert Einstein in a speech in 1945, after the atom bombs were dropped over Japan in August of that year. Einstein pointed out that the physicists in 1945 were in a situation which much resembled that in which Alfred Nobel once found himself. Einstein drew his conclusion from this: "Alfred Nobel invented an explosive more powerful than any then known -- an exceedingly effective means of destruction. To atone for this 'accomplishment' and to relieve his conscience, he instituted his award for the promotion of peace."

I can't see how Al Gore has done much of anything to promote peace, or even to aid in the "fraternity between nations". He should have worked harder on his fraternal relationship with the people in his own state before he considered helping "nations". As for the abolishment or reduction of standing armies or for holding and promoting peace congresses, maybe I could strain to believe he did a little something in that area, if giving lectures about the evils of global warming fits into the category of "peace congresses". I don't think so, but the Swedes... or Norwegians... or whoever they are, gave him a prize for something he did anyway. I'm sure he proudly displays it somewhere in one of his huge mansion-like houses.

We need to ask those folks in the midwest and the Dakotas about man made global warming.

The qualifications and reasons will be revealed in 50 years when they unlock that safe that hides the secret details about the merits of the nominees. Algore and his cronies preach that we should do as they say, NOT do as they do. The elite are "special" and therefore exempt from responsibility.

Too bad Madoff wasn't around back then to help with Alfred Nobel's capital investments. There wouldn't have been any prize money left to give algore.
