I've used up all my sick leave and most of my annual leave. I appreciate the freebie. Means I can spend four days of Christmas leave instead of three. It's too bad that we haven't gotten a pay raise but I appreciate this gift. It's a blessing for my family and I'm thankful.

Oh well, I guess if you get to have the 26th off with pay, take it...reality is, anybody coming to work the day after x-mas won't be worth a sh!t anyway..so you might as well stay home and play with your new toys...Either way, taxpayers will not get much for their buck that day.

Buster, you curmudgeon! Never change. Nasa, I don't remember Mondays or Fridays off around Christmas. Then I have only been a fed 17 years. I do remember lots of early releases on Fridays for Monday holidays I didn't get because of my 4/10 AWS Mon-Thu. What surprised me about this e-mail I got was that in the link to OPM it specifically stated that an employee on my schedule will get the 24th off as a paid holiday. Usually AWS types are ignored. Management has not published an official statement on this time off yet and as they often remind my classification, they are way more powerful than OPM. If I get the day off maybe I will work Friday to catch up?

I can relate to alevin on all parts except for the bad weather part. That happened once and I got the message when I was making my way through traffic about 1/2 mile from work. I worked that day and when I asked about getting the admin leave pay they declared me "essential" for that day. Whatever. I am no more greedy than most of you

I wonder, alevin, are you a supervisor or is it just your own workload you are lamenting about? No offense meant and trust me, I can relate to not enough time for the tasks. That's why I just worked 107 hours this pay period. Yeah, I know, to some of you that makes me a slacker. No, I am not a supervisor of anything. The days do pass quickly.

Well, whatever, POTUS threw a bone out that some of us will get to chew on.

Me, I am only a mentor and coach for the less experienced, not a formal supervisor, still takes a lot of energy and a fair amount of focused personalized attention. Got my own project workload and assignments beside coaching others on learning how to do theirs. My own project workload takes more hours to meet deadlines than end up being available, especially when unplanned unforeseen admin leave pops in between me and duedates assigned by project managers. the deadlines don't change just because admin leave got handed out when I needed that time to meet the deadlines.

I plan my worklife around deadlines, take official holiday days and sandwich in use or lose piecemeal between now and end of year use or lose deadline. extra unplanned timeoff runs the risk of substituting for use or lose, in which case I get the "lose" end of the stick, if I'm not watching like a hawk to make sure I make up the lost real work hours some other way to get work done on time, like work longer or later or on weekend, tallying up the credit hours, since they carry over, unlike A/L. anyway, the wind finally stopped blowing 65 mph nonstop today after 2 days of nonstop wind, and settled down into steady rain with no wind with heavy dark gray cloud cover. a nicer day than its been the last 2 days-so to speak. I met this weeks deadlines yesterday so today was a little more relaxed. more deadlines to catch up with over the weekend and clear out of the way by Monday so I can focus on additional upcoming deadlines. and sneak a few hours of A/L in there somewhere too along the way. rest of the month will be like that too into midJan. I left 3 days of use or lose on the table a couple years ago through miscalculation, in part due to unforeseen unplanned admin leave. promised myself wouldn't let that happen again.

Your reply could be mine as the situations are so similar. If you want, PM me and we can exchange laments. If we do not help out the "less experienced" we are not doing our job. So I beleive. I also beleive that there is a point the "less experienced" start using us to let them do their jobs.

You can be the "go to person" but need to do your own stuff and take your time off. Perhaps one of your unofficial protegees can pick up the slack.

Not the way it works, PO. Mentoring/coaching is part of my workload at this point, lower graded staff new to the agency way of doing things, unfamiliar with major chunk of wildland real estate and its peculiarities. I could do their work, they can't do mine. they have different assignments, ones I did when at lower grade, part of my job this year and next is not only teaching what they need to know for their new jobs, but how to apply it as they learn new to them work processes and programs and databases and laws that guide our work, as well as facts about this big chunk of real estate for the first time. I don't do their work for them, but I am the only one can show them how to go about doing it the right way, and do QA/QC checks on their work until they learn what it takes. We get challenged in court in this agency all the time. they need to know how to do things, and do them well enough. their work needs to be able to stand up in court when the time comes.

One is fresh out of school, the other fresh out of a whole different arm of the agency where they don't do anything like what we do around here. major learning curves in professional development for both for 1-3 years until they are fully competent to be turned loose at their current level with enough experience that they don't need much if any handholding. they both need me until they both know what they need to know and how to do it, at their own individual levels of career. but thing is, sometimes we discover what they don't know they need to know until I start reviewing a piece of their work they draft up for me to review. Calls for flexible approach to my work to help them be successful in meeting their own deadlines for their jobs. We're all in it together, the way it works around here. only thing I'm gritching about is the unplanned admin leave leaving me less flexibility in rest of my schedule.

Good thing I got this weeks deadlines done yesterday morning before the 65mph winds took down our office power midafternoon, otherwise today would have been a high-stress deadline day again today.

I assure it does..but rest assured, they will not violate any safety rules..at least while they have their kids on position giving flight instructions...So goathead and fly.
