Rita Hits Near Civil War Battleground

-- Hurricane Rita came ashore Saturday just east of Sabine Pass, Texas, home to a Civil War battleground and a town that was nearly destroyed by a hurricane over a century ago.
In 1886, a hurricane destroyed much of the town of Sabine Pass, killing 86 people. Major storms hit again in 1900 and 1915.
Sabine Pass was annexed by Port Arthur in 1978, and about 1,500 people lived in the community in the early 1980s.
The Sabine Pass Battleground State Park & Historic Site commemorates a battle in 1863, when the U.S. Navy tried to invade Confederate Texas. The Navy wanted access to the rail center of Houston, but was stopped by Lt. Dick Dowling of the Confederate Army and 46 of his men, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Web site.
Sabine Pass also is the birthplace of J.P. Richardson Jr., "The Big Bopper," who died in a plane crash along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens in 1959. Two years earlier, he recorded his most famous song, "Chantilly Lace."
Thanks!
I heard a roof was torn off one of the super Walmart's in Port Arthur. My mother would be pissed!!!
I turned off my tv and turned on some tunes. i feel much better now. :^
In Tyler County in eastern Texas, high winds ripped roofs off several buildings, including the police department in Woodville, sheriff's Chief Deputy Clint Sturrock said.
The junior high school in nearby Warren also lost its roof, and fire _ likely triggered by lightning _ broke out in a pile of logs. "We just let it burn," Sturrock said.

Offshore Drillings Rigs in Path of Rita
Offshore Platforms in Path of Rita
West Cameron, situated south of Lake Charles, LA to the TX-LA border, is likely to be one of the areas hardest hit by Rita and will most likely see some of the worst damage to its offshore installations. This area is one of the most most actively producing and explored areas in the Gulf of Mexico. It has the third highest number of unmanned offshore platforms and the fifth highest number of manned platforms of any area in the GOM, with a total of 292 unmanned and 88 manned platforms. Additionally, there are a total of 22 mobile offshore drilling rigs in the West Cameron area, including 19 jackups, 2 submersibles, and 1 platform rig. Of those rigs, 10 of them are owned and managed by TODCO, The Offshore Drilling Company, which is the rig manager with the most rigs facing possible damage from Rita.
Rita's economic threat wider than energy
Even with a reduced threat to refineries, the impact on businesses and consumers will be large.
