I also did my basic training at Fort Knox in 1969. It was December-January and very cold. I caught a bug and got sick, and later broke out in hives. Ah, those were the days when one screw-up caused pain for all by M14 rifles extended. It’s as rokid described it with old WWII barracks. I was in Company B, 3rd Battalion or something like that. There was no eating allowed, cause it was more like swallowing whole while trying to breath in-between swallows.

I believe they did but we never got to go on it because of all the damn rain. In fact, we had our bivouac after our 15 mile road march and were suppose to be bused back but the trucks couldn't get to us so we had to march all the way back, sometimes through waist high water. Had a drill sergeant make us drop when we got back. He was relieved of duty for that...........

I would never compare my basic training experience to being in Nam, but with all the rain, I had a better understanding.

    That sounds miserable.

I was there in the fall. It was dry and beautiful.

I didn't know that march was 15 miles! I just remember marching up hill in the dark until we stopped and pitched our shelter halves. ----Jim

You all do realize that "Stripes" was filmed there don't ya?

    Ah yes, Stripes.

Yes, I remember - our "dining hall" was right next to the PT field- and we were Bravo Company as well, as I remember. I was there between March and May 83. We never had to go under the barracks to pull anything "green", but I do remember having to stand firewatch all night- and yes, the lack of privacy in the latrine.

The biggest "deal" was when we finally were allowed to go to the PX about the fifth week or so. We thought we were in heaven, finally getting to be able to walk away from the barracks on our own!

    Memories....
