Stocks opened higher yesterday after a couple strong economic reports, but retreated after Ben Bernanke told Congress that unless growth accelerated, the unacceptably high U.S. unemployment rate would not keep dropping. The Dow fell 53-points on the day.

The bull train continued to roll up the tracks as the Dow gained another 24-points yesterday. Although the gains were modest, and small caps and Transportation stocks were down, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq followed the Dow up and kept their trends going.

Stocks opened sharply lower on Monday but buyers quickly stepped up after the release of some positive housing data, and the indices basically treaded water the rest of the day. The Dow had been down about 100-points in early trading but closed down just 1-point.

After some ups and downs, stocks ended the day mostly flat on Friday. The Dow dipped 2-points and the S&P 500 added 2. Can the overhead resistance of the 2011 high be broken, or will stocks slip on Greece and/or oil?

Stocks bounced around during last week's holiday shortened week, and ended up with just a small gain in the S&P 500. The weakness in the dollar has helped the indices, particularly the international stocks, but unfortunately it has also helped the price of oil.
