    We've been wondering for months what was capable of shaking this relentless upside in stock indices; it turned out to be amateur investors forcing the hand of hedge fund short positions. It was a very interesting development this week and will have its own consequences in some form; but it was a small drop in a big bucket.     Earnings and the inauguration helped to keep the fire burning in the stock market. It seemed to be a likely week for the bears to step in and give this unrelenting bull run a break, but rather it was another run for the bulls to new all time highs. Stock indices did pull back slightly from the highs produced late in the week but dip buyers kept the price not far from the top.     Stocks were mixed for the week. There was more rotation from large caps to small caps than overall selling. Momentum was slowed in the over extended large cap names which can be looked at as a healthy move going forward if not a potential entry point for those who aren't willing to buy indices at their highs. Bank earnings started to be released Friday and investors were quick to sell their financial holdings which added weight to the large cap price.

    A new year brings new all time highs. Buyers have not been discouraged and their confidence has allowed political chaos during a pandemic with job losses be a buying opportunity. Stocks fell Monday and it looked like the 2020 status quo was over. But buyers were back to work for the rest of the week. The events at the capital building and the release of the first jobs report with job losses since April were shrugged off as temporary.     The year ends on a high note for large caps while small caps show some weakness. The last week of the year carries light volume with it which can bring volatile and less predictable trading with a fraction of moves carrying the markets. The S&P 500 began the week with gains but had choppy behavior through the week.
