The short week ended on a positive note after jumping between weekly gains and losses. Anticipation of inflation and job market news kept prices steady leading up to the release of the jobless claims Thursday which came in at their lowest weekly level since the beginning of the pandemic. It was green across the board this week for the TSP funds. Investors collectively jumped back into equities after a couple indecisive weeks of what inflation data means for the future. The S&P 500's (C-fund) 1.2% gain this week pushed the index into positive territory for the month of May marking four straight months of gains. We had another week split in two by direction. Like the previous week the first half carried the weight of inflation fears and a little carry over of the sell off in cryptocurrencies. The greatest slip came at Wednesday ahead of the release of the Fed minutes. The highlights of the Fed minutes were its focus on watching inflation while thinking about slowing down its bond buying program. Stock indices were agitated this week with inflation in the hot seat. The first half of the week was the steepest sell-off since October and by Wednesday's close the C and S-fund were down 4 and 5.3% respectively in those first three days. Dip buyers and opportunistic traders jumped back into stocks and the last couple days brought decent gains to cut the early losses. Friday's gains were steady and held not far from the highs. Rotation out of small caps and into large cap growth names sent the TSP stock funds in opposite directions this week. The C-fund gained 1.3% this week while the S-fund shed nearly 2%.
