TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Ups

The opportunity of the week was to buy the C-fund on Wednesday. The C and S-fund pulled back sharply on Wednesday after the Federal Open Markets Committee took stage to deviate from investors' expectations of the Fed Fund rate path. The market has been pricing in a rate cut in the March meeting for some time, but the Fed and their chairman Jerome Powell are not so sure they want to pull the trigger so soon. TSP investors holding the S-fund over last weekend were welcomed Monday with a 1.53% gain. This was a grand outperformance against the other TSP funds for Monday, but investors who held the S-fund through the rest of the week were left with a weekly gain of only 1.21%. The I-fund ended up with the best weekly performance with a 1.62% return.

The C-fund has been the fund to hold in 2024, and only a few members have been able to out smart it so far.

The C-fund reached new all-time highs to conclude Friday's rally in large caps. Meanwhile, the S, I, and even the F-fund have all slipped lower so far in 2024. All three of these funds have losses deeper than 1% for the year led by the S-fund's 2.45% loss.

The TSP stock funds prices recovered lost ground in the second week of the new year. Only the C-fund was able to lift into positive territory for the year. The C-fund was helped by the reawakening of the large tech companies that carry more weight in the S&P 500 index. Stocks began the new year with a slump. The enthusiasm that drove prices higher through November and December left investors in the first week of 2024.
