TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Stocks were mixed this week as we saw a slight gain in large caps with some losses in small caps. The S&P 500 (C-fund) traded in a tight range for the week despite catalysts from earnings reports and the jobs report Friday. Stocks seemed to have lost their momentum we've seen the past few months but this has not yet provoked stock owners to sell. It will be interesting to see what will be the spark of the next big move in the market; though algorithms will most likely decided that one.

209,000 jobs were added last month and June's numbers were revised with an addition of another 10,000 jobs or so. The unemployment rate is down to 4.3% for the first time in 16 years.

The I-fund led the TSP funds with a gain of 0.87% while the S-fund lagged with the only loss in the TSP funds.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending August 7th:

Here are the monthly returns for July:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) made little movement toward any trend line this week so it remains between overhead resistance of a long-term trading channel and its 20-day EMA. The C-fund ended the week with a slight gain of 0.23%

The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) was down for the week as it seems to have found resistance in a trend line formed from the peaks of April and June. The 50-day EMA did hold as support for the last three days of trading to keep losses to a minimum. The S-fund was down 0.57% for the week.

EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) gapped up this week before leveling off after hitting rising resistance. The index traded right above the new open gap for the rest of the week. The I-fund led the TSP funds with a gain of 0.87%.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) broke above the cup and handle formation Thursday but was back below the resistance line Friday at the open and that is also where it closed for the week. The open gap from last week was filled in the process and the 20-day EMA is just below the current price. The F-fund was up 0.17% for the week.
