TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Stocks were mixed this week as more earnings reports came in along with the FOMC meeting. Poor earnings reports kept U.S. stocks down keeping large caps flat and dropping small caps in value. There was also trouble in the dollar which helped foreign markets which gave the I-fund a positive gain for the week to lead the TSP funds. The FOMC had little affect on the market as expected other than some volatility intraday Wednesday.

More earnings reports come in next week which will be key as some of the indices are now ready to test support.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending July 28th:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) started the week below resistance but broke above mid-week. However that did not hold through as the index is now back below the trend line. The 20-day EMA is just below the current price but has not been a key support line for the index as much as the 50-day EMA which is farther below. The C-fund had no return for the week.

The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) gapped up early in the week but began to fall starting Wednesday. Poor earnings reports pushed the index to the top of its previous trading channel which met with its 20-day EMA. The sum of the two may be solid support as we move toward more earnings reports next week. The S-fund lagged the TSP funds this week with a loss of 0.35%.

EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) was up this week as the dollar was down. The index was helped with a rising support line but an open gap below could provoke a break down to fill it. The I-fund led the TSP funds with a gain of 0.22%.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) broke down early this week opening another gap but closing an old one in the process. Bonds traded around the 20-day EMA for the rest of the week partially filling the new open gap. Bonds now sit between the 50-day EMA below to act as support and the trend line created by the peaks of June and July above to act as resistance. The F-fund was down 0.21% for the week.
