TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Rate this Entry
Stocks moved higher this week as we headed into the holiday weekend. They continued where they ended the previous Friday - recovering from the poor day last Wednesday. The open gap was filled but the momentum continued and we saw the S&P 500 reach a new all-time high. The week ended on a flat note Friday but a very slight gain marked the 7th day in a row of gains for the S&P 500.

The Fed met this week and all but assured us of a rate hike in June. Traders may have bought their remarks or were already buying with the positive holiday bias. Rate hike announcements were a major catalyst for a direction not too long ago. Traders seems to have faith in the market to survive another rate hike, after its reaction to the previous hikes.

The C-fund outperformed the TSP funds with a gain of 1.47%. The F-fund was near even with just a 0.03% gain.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending May 26th:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) filled the open gap left behind last week on Monday and continued up from there. The index found some overhead resistance which halted the rising momentum Friday. There was also an open gap produced at Thursday's open that is just below the current price. The C-fund was up 1.47% for the week.

The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) was above its 50-day EMA on Monday joined continued up from there. The index broke above the overhead resistance of the the declining trading channel it was within since late April. The index pulled back slightly Friday. The S-fund was up 1.19% for the week.

EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) did not move too much this week so it left the open gap below open as it continues to hug the rising trend line. Strength in the dollar may have added trouble to this index this week but the I-fund was still able to produce 0.23% this week.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) started to fill the open gap below but made it half way before returning to the April highs. In the end the F-fund made little progress in either direction and lagged the TSP funds with a slight gain of 0.03% for the week.
