TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Stocks were mixed this week with modest gains in small caps while large caps fell short in their fight to break even. A news conference from Donald Trump mixed stocks up Wednesday with his vilified statements about the pharmaceutical industry that catalyzed a sell off in bio-tech stocks. The rise in stocks since the election has been attributed to investors betting on the economy friendly policies expected from the Trump administration. The news conference was an opportunity for investors to get a better idea of what those policies may be but rather it seemed the conference left some investors with more questions than answers.

The beginning of earnings season and the inauguration next week will be in the spotlight for traders. The consensus has been a sell-off with the inauguration but the consensus has been consistently wrong the past year.

The I-fund led this week with a gain of 0.81% while the C-fund lagged with, though slight, the only loss for the TSP funds.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending January 13th:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) has been unable to move much further past the peaks established mid-December. Traders are waiting for more legitimate reasons to buy more of this possibly overbought market. The C-fund was down 0.09% for the week.

The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) has too been within a sideways moving trading channel since mid-December. The index is close to testing the top of the channel a second time. The S-fund ended up 0.48% for the week.

EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) made it above the September peak but has run into possible rising resistance of thee last three most recent peaks. There is also some rising support to back up a failed attempt to break above the rising resistance. The I-fund led the TSP funds this week with a gain of 0.81%.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) broke below the support line of the rising trading channel that began mid-December. Despite this, the F-fund produced a 0.21% gain for the week.
