Stocks were up this week with help from the July jobs report numbers exceeding expectations. This pushed the S&P 500 out and above the trading channel it had closed within for 17 straight days before Friday. The action preceding Friday was mixed and mostly in negative territory for the week.

The C-fund led the TSP funds this week with a 0.5% gain while the S-fund was not far behind with a gain of 0.3%. The F-fund was down but the I-fund lagged with more than a 1% loss for the week.




Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending August 5th:




The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) closed above its trading channel that had started in the middle of July after the jobs report on Friday. That did create a new open gap between Thursday and Friday so we may see the index return to that trading channel to fill it soon. The C-fund was up 0.49% to start off the first week of August.




The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) fell below the support line of a rising trading channel on Tuesday but its 20-day EMA held as support despite the opportunity to fill an open gap below. The index turned around from there and was back within the rising trading channel by Friday. The S-fund was up 0.3% for the week.




EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) closed an open gap from the previous week on Monday. It continued to drop from there but support from its 200-day EMA decreased the damage and the I-fund finished the week off with a loss of 1.35%.




AGG (Bonds / F-fund) bounced around this week and now seems to be within an apex formation. With stocks up Friday, bonds fell to close an open gap from the previous day and to lock in a negative return of 0.53% for the week. There are three open gaps still below that will be on the mind of traders until they are filled.
