TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Rate this Entry
A slow down in the Chinese economy sent a shock wave through major markets across the globe. Nervous investors took money out of stocks and the S&P 500 saw its greatest weekly loss since 2011. All the TSP stock funds were down 5% and more for the week.

The F-fund saw gains as money moved out of stocks.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending August 21st:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) broke below its 200-day EMA and support of the March and July lows on Thursday. The downside continued Friday and the damage added up to the end when SPY closed at its lows. The c-fund was down 5.71% for the week.

Here is some more perspective of the damage done. After trading at a nearly constant rising slope since 2013 we've seen the S&P 500 begin to flatten out the past year. We saw a drop below the 200-day EMA back in October that recovered quickly but with different circumstances we can't assume a similar reaction. The S&P 500 is not too far off the early lows of 2015. If the downside were to continue into next week we may see a test of these lows for support. Although this may look like trouble you could also look at this chart and see opportunity if you have faith in the U.S. economy.

The Dow Completion Index (S-fund) closed below the support of its descending trading channel Thursday and gapped down slightly Friday and continued its decline. The S-fund had the least of the losses of the TSP stock funds, ending the week down 5%.

EFA (EAFE Index / I-fund) filled its gaps this week and continued to decline falling below the July lows Friday. The I-fund was down 5.3% for the week and is now down 7.1% for the year.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) was up as panic pushed money out of stocks and traders left on the sidelines with cash at hand found safety in bonds. AGG bounced off its 50-day EMA Wednesday and now sits at the top of its trading channel. The F-fund was up 0.6% for the week.
