TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

Rate this Entry
We saw volatile action this pre-holiday week and despite the ups and downs, modest gains led to a breakout. Monday put the S&P 500 almost immediately above last weeks closing price but as the week continued there seemed to be fewer reasons to keep putting money in a market which has been known for its fake outs lately. However, the trend continued and getting easier to be optimistic about the new territory.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending May 22nd:

Looking at the past few weeks, the SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) has had trouble staying above resistance for more than a day. It has been above its resistance line for seven trading days now so the breakout has held. As we've mentioned in our daily commntary, breakouts following a cup and handle formation usually come back and test the resistance line for support before continuing the rising trend, so don't be surprised if we see a small pullback starting off the short week. The C-fund was up 0.21% this week.

The Wilshire 4500 (S-fund) also had modest gains and is working back up the trading channel toward the April highs. The S-fund was able to lead the TSP funds this week and is in a healthy spot for more appreciation as it sits just below the middle of its 2015 trading channel. The S-fund was up 0.68% this week.

The EFA (EAFE Index / I fund) is still hugging resistance of the rising wedge and actually opened and closed below it on Friday. The I-fund had a slight loss of 0.59% this week but is still above 1% for the month.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) has been dancing with its longer-term support line this week closing just above it Friday. It now has to deal with the falling resistance that stands in the way and we may see it test its 200-day EMA soon. The F-fund was down 0.48% for the week.

Good luck and thanks for reading. We will be back here next week with another TSP Wrap Up. You can read our daily market commentary at the Market Comments page. If you need more help deciding what to do with your account, perhaps one of our Premium Services can help.
