TSP Weekly Wrap Up

Rate this Entry
Reactions to the jobs report last Friday left the market overbought, so naturally the week started off in pursuit to correct this overbought market. Traders took their profits and by early Tuesday the market had stabilized and traders were ready to put their money back to work. Stocks opened higher Wednesday but couldn't keep the momentum and closed virtually flat. Markets rallied on Thursday and the S&P 500 made a new all-time closing high. Stocks made small gains on Friday and the S&P 500 set another closing high.

Here are the weekly, monthly, and annual TSP fund returns for the week ending May 15th:

The SPY (S&P 500 / C-fund) filled an open gap left from the previous Friday's jobs report early in the week. On Wednesday the S&P 500 pushed higher but was stopped by overhead resistance and closed just below the opening price. Thursday opened above resistance and the S&P 500 was able to reach new highs. Friday pushed slightly higher to stay above resistance for the second day. Investors are not too excited about the new highs due to their experience these past months where the broad market tends to retreat once highs are made. The C-fund was up 0.39%.

The Wilshire 4500 (S-fund) outperformed the the C-fund this week but there were no new highs made like in the large caps. The Wilshire 4500 still sits near the lower end of its long-term trading channel but is back above the 50-day EMA. The S-fund was up 0.79% this week.

EFA (EAFE Index / I fund) has spent two days above the rising wedge channel and is very close to new highs, with much of the credit going to the decline in the dollar. There is still an open gap left unfilled from the previous week to keep in mind. The I-fund has outperformed the other TSP funds for the year and is now up 12.29% for 2015. The I-fund was up 1.46% for the week.

AGG (Bonds / F-fund) fell through long-term support early this week and struggled to stay above water. On Friday bonds rallied above their descending trading channel and were able to end the week with a slight gain of 0.03%.
