Monthly Update (covering the past 20 years)

Currently, the index is sitting at an outstanding 5.89%

Over the past 20 years, this is substantially higher than the average gains of 1.65% and above the average positive gains of 4.62%

If the index closed out the month today, it would rank as the 5th best October in 20 years, and 8th best over the past 65 Octobers.




Weekly update ...

Stocks opened higher but it looked like the bears were going to make a their move around noon as the gains vanished. But something lit a fire under the marker in afternoon trading and the indices trended higher for the next four hours and into the close. The Dow ended with a gain of 217-points.

Stocks floundered yesterday as lackluster economic data continues to drip in. A weaker than expected PPI report and disappointing retail sales sent the indices lower. Wal-Mart led the charge on the downside as they lowered sales and profit guidance sending that stock down 10% on the day, which contributed a large part of the Dow's 157-point decline.

Stocks pulled back on Tuesday with the indices dropping modestly. The Dow lost just 50-points but percentage-wise, the losses in the small caps were more significant.

The theory of the decoupling of the price of oil from the stock market lost a little credibility yesterday as oil was also down close to 2%.

Stocks have been relatively flat the last couple of days and with yesterday being a Federal holiday, many banks were closed, as was the bond market so the trading volume was very light light and the action didn't prove very significant.
