  1. TSP Talk - Is it time to get on the train, or off?

Stocks continued their winning ways on Thursday as we saw a relief rally of sorts. Relief that the Fed did not raise rates and, as we talked about yesterday, the market really doesn't seem to believe that they are going to raise again this year, despite the threats during Powell's press conference. The Dow, S&P 500 (C), Nasdaq, and the S-fund all gained about 1.2% on the day. Despite another big decline in the dollar, the I-fund lagged the US stocks a bit yesterday, but posted a big gain ...
  2. TSP Talk - Fed pauses, says more hikes to come, however

Stocks were mixed after a typical choppy FOMC meeting day after the Fed policy statement was released. The Fed left rates alone this time but indicated more rate hikes are probable before the end of the year and that may be why small caps lagged and were down sharply. The Dow lost 229-points but almost all of that was from Unitedhealth Group, which was down 6.3% and is the heaviest weighted stock in the Dow. Stocks sold off sharply during the press conference but came back by the close to give ...
  3. TSP Talk - Lower CPI encourages investors

Stocks rallied yet again on Tuesday after the better than expected CPI report, and before today's FOMC meeting and the Fed's decision on interest rates. The Dow added 146-points and the gains were even better in the broader indices as the S&P, Nasdaq, and small caps all had big days. Yields were up and the dollar was down so the F-fund was down, and the I-fund outpaced the S&P 500 (C-fund) as Japans' stock market skyrockets to a 33 year high.

  4. TSP Talk - Climbing a wall of worry, or buying the rumor?

Stocks open slightly higher on Monday morning but the buyers were lying in wait, and whether it was algorithmic trading or just FOMO chasers, it added up to a big day for most of the stock indices by the close. The Dow gained 190-points and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq are making new 2023 closing highs. Small caps led early but the large caps caught up and surpassed them before the day was done. Bonds and the dollar were up.

  5. TSP Talk - Will they or won't they... raise rates this week?

It looked as if we were finally seeing a shift into a small caps but that short-lived trend seemed to change back to favor large caps in the final two days of trading last week. It was a good sign while it lasted, but right now the market can't seem to lift all boats at the same time. When one goes up, the other suffers. The Dow gained 43-points on Friday and the S&P and Nasdaq closed with gains, although well off their morning highs, but small caps in the S-fund lagged with a moderate loss. ...
